DayZ Launcher | Slow and unreliable to search for servers
Closed, DuplicatePublic

Description

Hello,

Many people have stopped using the official launcher due to it's slow searching and not finding the server we are searching for.
The vast majority still uses 3rd party launchers which are way faster at searching servers but give tons of issues when there is a game update or mod update.

Server hosters tend to suffer a lot from this as there is always a massive amount of people coming in asking why they can't join via the 3rd party launcher and there is nothing we can help with as the support for those launchers is paid.

Of course this is the player's fault for opting to use a launcher not supported by you guys but people just hate waiting 10mins for the over 9000 servers to load up and sometimes not even find the server they are searching for.
I personally use the official launcher all the time as it's the most stable from my experience and when I can't find a new server I'm searching for I use a website that starts the launcher with parameters to join the server. I always favourite the servers for faster access.

Is there any possibility that the launcher could get improved? People always give the excuse of it being too slow so maybe it would be possible to chache the servers once searched?

Thanks,
NAyRAM

Found this ticket when looking for new ones. There was an update to the launcher today (2023-02-02) but it has not improved things, the scan is slower than ever I think and the launcher simply will not find many established and popular servers such as Spaggies, DayOne, Zero and others. There is however a huge amount of shady Chinese servers displaying stats that makes me wonder if they are at all real. Along with fixing the above issues, improved filters to be able to exclude certain attributes would be a nice thing.

How many mods are in your workshop?
I find the server list gets slower the more mods it validates at launch.

I made a ticket about this Oct 22 2022

Did a recent purge of unused mods so it's not that bad. Together with Arma it freed up 800gb of disk space but sadly it had no noticeable effect on the launcher. But imo the launcher has been pretty fine until recently, but now it is practically useless. To find my favourites that disappeared I had to direct connect - and get booted because of mods - and then favourite it from the "Recent" tab.

I really hope these issues with the launcher are fixed asap.

The launcher got really bad with 1.19

I'm about to start using DZSA again after 2 years of telling people not to use it.

Hello,

I know the devs have already been informed and they're already investigating the cause. Hopefully we'll have a hotfix tomorrow if not monday. We'll just have to ba patient for now.
The launcher did get worst with 1.19 and even worst now with 1.2.

With this being said, I've also seen weird behaviour from Steam's side (games not being able to update and such) but I can't confirm if it's related.
Me personally I still won't get anywhere near DZSA.

A workaround for this is using direct connect and then checking the recent tab and favourite them again (if you can). You can find IPs and such here: https://cactus.tools/dayz/servers

Thanks,

Noticed today (possibly since the recent update) the server search is still having the same issues, but now only 6-7,000 servers are showing instead of the 9,000+, and nothing local to me.

Now almost completely lost servers and the CIS countries and Europe in the search for the launcher

We are unfortunately still seeing this after the 1.20 update.

We are getting several reports per day by players telling us that that our (UK) servers cannot be found using the launcher and are experiencing it ourselves as well. Our current workaround is direct connect but this doesn't really scale and we're seeing lots of people just give up.

We hear the same from other Community servers.

With 1.20 the launcher is even slower at searching for servers and the majority of what it finds are shady chinese ones.

People have started to install 3rd party Launchers again which brings issues with mods and game. This may not seem relevant to you but they'll just blame the developers cause they "broke" the game with the 1.2 patch.

The number of servers found in the community tab has dropped to less than 3000 and when I search I never find the server I'm looking for. There are ways to work around it but people are just lazy and will give up with "it doesn't work".

A significant part of the problem is that the official launcher does all filtering client-side, which means the client has to download the entire list of 9000+ DayZ servers from the Steam Master Server before a filter can work comprehensively.

A better approach is to leverage the Steam Master Server Query Protocol's built-in support for filtering to perform the filter server-side: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Master_Server_Query_Protocol#Filter

The query protocol allows you to perform server-side filters on server name (\name_match), IP/port (\gameaddr), map (\map), and more. At least give us the option to use server-side filtering for the fields that are supported by the protocol, please!

https://feedback.bistudio.com/T170263 seems to be the hot ticket for that issue.
