I wholeheartedly disagree with this mechanic being implemented. This absolutely shits all over immersion IMO.
Anything that affects my character and not me disconnects me from my character and makes me painfully aware that I am playing a game. I really hope this is not implemented.
What we should be thinking about is how we can implement negative ramifications for KoS that affect the players, not just their characters.
Straight off the top of my head for example:
- Discharging a firearm alerts every zombie in ear-shot of the shot.. more zombies then you want to alert.
- Melee weapons made from fragile materials deteriorate the more you bash them off of hard objects like zombies and other players. For example a badly damaged baseball bat that has been sitting in a shed for a long time is likely to break if you keep whacking things with it. Same goes for a shovel.
- You can apply this deterioration to the firearms too. The more you fire it the more it deteriorates. Unless you clean it. Maybe one thing leads to another and you don't have time or forget to clean it. Now you need to find a replacement part which means scavenging the world without a gun. You might not be so trigger happy with it from now on... that's if you survive long enough to repair it.
I want to have to make a realistic decision about the value of another player's life vs. my own. What you might find is that the harder it gets to survive the more value there is to another person's life. You might even feel a little twinge of guilt for killing a player, knowing that they have fought long and hard to amass such a stockpile of food and water..
KoS is prevalent for a few reasons:
- There's fuck all else to do at the moment.
- It's easy and has zero negative ramifications.
- There is no bigger thrill in the game... scratch that... there is NO OTHER thrill in the game at the moment. Bring in the massive roaming zombie horde that has your party scattering into separate buildings in a blind panic and batting down the hatches. Frantically trying to cover the entrances. "Where's that random guy we were gonna kill?" "Who cares!? Drop that fucking ammo box over here, right here!"
Ok no one is arguing with these but my point is that implementing a "sanity meter" (to describe it quickly) is a 'brute force and ignorance' approach to solving the prevalence of KoS. Let's strive for something a little more elegant that actually makes the game more (not less) immersive.
They are trying to explain this away with "They can hear and smell you" but I'm calling bullshit on that one

Hey that's vital information, put cheese in the game. No more tinned tuna that clearly has a tab for opening but which I need a tin opener to open...
I like the hold button to continue eating/drinking idea but prefer the eat-all/drink-all option.. maybe we need a cancel action button? A button that cancels any action currently being performed?
So if in the middle of an eat-all or drink-all or maybe while bandaging you need to stop abruptly then you hit the cancel button..
How come when I put a suggestion here all I get is "BLLAAAAAUUUUGHGHH THAT ISN'T AN ISSUE IT'S A SUGGESTION IT DOESN'T BELONG HERE KAAABLLAAAUUUUGGHHH"
Guess it must have been a shit suggestion...
Anyway this is a good idea and I up vote it! I also like how we are sharing ideas! So much more productive than being arrogant fucks on the internet! :D
While we're on the subject, can the axe not take up like... the whole left side of the screen.. who holds an axe up in front of their face like that so they can't see zombies coming??

Me two cents:
1)Saying that 3rd person has an advantage over 1st person is true but it is a moot point since everyone has access to the 3rd person view. If I could only use 1st person and you had access to both 1st and 3rd then it is relevant to say that you have an advantage over me. This is not the case though so there really isn't an issue along these lines.
2)I don't think anyone disagrees that 1st person trumps 3rd person for realism. Some will argue that 3rd person gives the player a realistic 180 degree view but in my opinion this is more than cancelled out by the very unrealistic ability to see around corners and over walls. *I think this is inherent of a 3rd person view and no amount of tweaking the view will effectively remedy it! You will only end up making it redundant* Besides, the alt key offers you 180+ degrees.
Personally I don't see the point of the 3rd person view except to make the game more fun and for me the fun comes from the realism so yeah if I was making the game I would can it altogether.
I think at the end of the day this is a conundrum for Rocket and it's just a question of whether they want to sacrifice fun for realism or vice versa. I've given my vote :)
