I experienced that a lot, never really thought of it as a bug though. As I think about it now... yeah was quite annoying. :)
The body should disappear after ten minutes in the current version of the game.
As you can't loot and it disappears after relog, it seems the body is correctly removed server-side, but the client does not remove it (unless you relog).
Were you still within these ten minutes or over?
I had this happen to me, too.
Had a stack of a few loose 7.62 (I guess two) and emptied a 7.62 snap loader. Doing this created an empty snap loader (expected), a stack of two 7.62 from the snap loader (expected) and brought the amount of ammo in the lose stack down to 0.
(will add inventory screen if I can)
As you can see in the screenshot, the first stack in the inventory was set to zero while the other stack of 20 was untouched. The last stack of two was created by emptying the snap loader.
The ammo in the mosin and in my ammo box was untouched.
I experienced the same problem, but only after several hours of gameplay (without problems).
My buddy experienced it right after login.
Win 8
i5
HD7950
8GB RAM
SSD
Correction: Did experience this today, as I tabbed back into the game.
I wasn't on a server at that time, just idling in the menu with the character in the backgroud. I had the game running in the background for about one hour.
The white noise appeared concurrently with the reloading-animation (and sound) of the mosin my character is holding.
Confirmed, had this happen yesterday on every relog and - as far as I remember even when starting the game as the character loaded up in the menu.
Did not experience it today.
While there was a bug that created virtual copies (where you could modify both of them) of the items looted from dead bodies, this one creates true duplicates.
You can duplicate the weapon all its attachment and the ammo doing this. Tested it with a Mosin, my buddy was able to use the scope on his own Mosin without the one on my character disappearing.
I even found an M4A1 lying in the middle of the forest today. I guess someone logged out on that spot (near Electro, behind a tree, so very likely).
Can confirm this bug, happened to me while I was on the ship during server restart.
app0815's workaround works, walking towards the door and relogging gets you out.
Happened to me, too. On top of the Cherno townhall, drawing my Mosin when crouched.

Confirming this for 114008, I encountered this bug yesterday (actually not me but a friend who we handcuffed for fun).
Workaround: You can relog without dying after the status message appeared.
I don't think scattering military grade loot is a good approach against server hopping. Not that I think it wouldn't reduce it, but it think other - more effective - measures should be taken.
The game is in an early stage, there are only two long weapons. Civilian weapons could be added to deerstands and lone farm buildings. There are currently empty heli crash sites, too.
I think in the current state the risk vs reward in gaining access to a long weapon is OK. Yes, this creates hot spots, and I think it is good that it does.
Experienced it today. (on a regular server)
I started playing long before the server restarted.
I logged in after restart (everything fine), but server seemed to hickup and restarted again.
Afterwards, logging in again, I spawned at the coast without gear.
All on the same server.
I have an account on hardcore, too. But that character was at a different location and untouched.
