Voiceovers not properly audible in surround sound
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Surround sound does not appear to function correctly. Voiceovers are not properly audible.

EDIT: Recently it showed up again in the campaign.

The right channel is mute, you can hear it very clear on the left channel only, if you look at the speaker straight ahead, the voice is very faint.

Does not affect radio message, only direct speech.

Yep, had the same problem. I can't even hear the guy. Sometimes it gets slightly better if to turn with your left ear to him

The game appears to be mapping sounds to surround sound channels, such as front center, but the sound isn't making it to the speakers. This means any sound mapped to anything but the front two is being lost.

Having same issue using Realtek onboard HD audio and 5.1 speakers connected via 6ch direct.

Similarly to Fuse, Realtek onboard HD audio, 5.1 speakers or 5.1 Zalman headphones, and can barely hear the rangemaster. It's definitely louder if I'm on his right (so left 'ear' towards him), but staring straight at him or on his left and I get no audio from him.

Poor Rangemaster... no listeners.

I have dedicated sound card device M-Audio ProFire 610 with AKG k240 Studio. On firing drill showcase it sounds really bad. When up to 5-7 meters (which is fairly big distance if speaking of voiceovers) sound comes like from everywhere. Soundsource of talks/voiceovers should be smaller, at best on the height of the head and more precise. Leaning prone next to voiceovering unit would make a difference than standing next to it. Sound should also be more directional, it should be heard much better at front of the soundsource (which should be face at this case) than at back of it. In fact all sound sources should depend on direction and their position fairly equate.

Issue appears to have been resolved for me in the recent beta update. Thanks, BI.

Should be fixed in current version.

This still occurs for me when i was playing the Campaign on Dev branch

5.1 is not fixed - thats why it is so quiet

Well I can see that the specific repro applies to CoF:Green, where the instructor voice was switched back to radio because of that, which indeed was rather a workaround than a fix.

It seems like the issue applies to the campaign now again. That's what you get for merely working around an issue.

Still occurring for me in the campaign on Dev branch. Can't hear the briefings unless I turn to the right and listen with left ear!

This is also happening in my case. Playing the campaign on a windows 7 OS with xonar d2x and 5.1 speakers (logitech z5500). The voiceovers cannot be heard from the front speaker. No mods are being used.

Same here, this is causing problems in the campaign. Please fix Asap.

I am using "Creative XFI Xtreme Music" on Win7 64 and the audio control panel is set to headphones mode and I am using headphones.

This issue is also happening for me as well. Win 7 64, using Logitech g930 configured as 7.1 in Windows.

This is happening for me also for all briefings on the campaign on stable branch.

I'm using a Creative X-Fi Titanium HD soundcard in gaming mode with CMSS-3D enabled and headphones.

Same problem on Sound blaster ZxR (win 8.1).
Try without all creative sound option (crystalizer, prostudio etc..) same problem.
Annoying during the campaign :(

Having the exact same issue.
It feels like I'm deaf in the right ear.
Hadn't noticed it until playing the campaign.

This problem is very annoying in MP too (with Acre for example) as it use the direct speech channel of the game too.

I'm having this problem, but I am only using stereo headphones.

ceeeb, what model of headphones? Just wondering because all of the reports generally mention surround sound configurations.

is still an issue for me .. i use the Razer Maelstorm Usb headset with surround sound .. its all the same only left ear can hear the speach .. it dose not matter if i switch between 2.1 and 7.1 surround sound .. testet it with the g35 .. same issue there .. the ony way i can hear speach is to turn my head to the right so the the sound come directly into my left ear .. than i can hear it clear .. else ist imposible to hear annything ... hope you guys can fix it .. would be real nice =)

This issue is fixed in my case with the latest dev build (12/11/2013) and using a dedicated sound card (Xonar D2X) with surround speakers. Thanks for fixing this.

Choum added a comment.Nov 12 2013, 8:59 PM

yes, fixed in the dev build for me too.

It is "fixed" for me on dev now (I'm using X-Fi Titanium HD).

However, the sound is no longer 3D positioned so it breaks immersion. You don't hear where the speech is coming from when you turn your head.

Should we open a new bug for this?

starlightman : Does it occur only during cinematic intro ?

Ingame I don't have this problem but when I'm in some (not all) "cinematic mode" like in the beginning of the third mission (when you have the black bar and walk), it's look like you don't have positioned sound for voice.

But during briefing in the same mission I have positionned sound.

I haven't tested that extensively but for me it was happening in a briefing. I did the briefing for the Wet Work mission and when Miller was talking he was centre panned with no 3D positioning.
