Incredibly low FPS when in multiplayer servers
Reviewed, NormalPublic

Description

I have a computer capable of running arma 3 with no issues what so ever in map editor and scenarios i have perfect frame rate but as soon as i join an wasteland server or any multiplayer server the game becomes unplayable. even if i change my settings from ultra to lowest possible i remain at 20fps max. multiplayer is simply unplayable at this time and i believe that a gtx680 4gb should not have 20FPS on low settings.

Event Timeline

There are a very large number of changes, so older changes are hidden. Show Older Changes

I have yet to join a multiplayer server that Arma 3 does not choke up and eventually settles around 5-10 fps.

I can make my own missions and they run just fine without any severe performance issues.

I have an older CPU and mobo, but it can handle every other game just fine on high settings, BF3, Skyrim, IL2:CoD, Rise Of Flight, Kerbal Space Program, etc.. The only two other exceptions being Arma 2 & PlanetSide 2. My new gfx card should be having -zero- issues with Arma 3.

Intel Core 2 Quad (Q6600) - 4 cores @ 2.4Ghz
6GB DDR2 (PC2-4300)
NVIDIA Geforce GTX 650 Ti 2GB DDR5

I noticed that it happens when a server reaches a specific amount of players or the mission its self has issues. I can play a server perfectly smooth (still has fps drops) but once the server fills to 10+ people the problems start. (with the exception of a few servers ive played)

This happens to me too, I can get 50~55fps with everything on ultra in singleplayer missions but on multiplayer it drops drastically to unplayable.

I think you use mods, for idk what reason some mods cause really bad performance in multiplayer, for me it work well, but i have trying to play with a friend, he have installed 1 or 2 mods i don't remember and the game was totally unplayable cause of the bad framerate, he have try in the editor and it work without problems, and back to the same server (if i remember it is but i'm not sure about) and the game get good framerate when mods was deleted, try it, if its the cause, try to find wish one cause this by delete only one (just rename the mods folder or put the main folder of the mods "@modsname" inside another folder (like "save") and try each one by one.
Anyway if the problem come with the mods (if after delete or move all main mod folder inside another folder for example it stop to lag in Multiplayer) you can give more information to the dev team and get your problem solve !
And sadly if you can't play without mods at least you will still be able to play.

Ever since i upgraded no problems with performance, even on wasteland servers with loads of players.

My specs are:

Intel Core i7-4770 (3.5, no OC yet)
ASUS GTX770-DC2OC-2GD5
16GB ram (Corsair DDR3 1866MHz CL10 Vengeance)
Game and win 7 on Samsung SSD840 256GB

I believe SSD has strong impact. I run everything on ultra, 1920*1200, dist. 2500, obj. 1500, shadow medium 100m, AA 4X and even wasteland runs 30-50fps.

Unfortunately arma 3 needs high-end machines :(
(i used to run it on laptop).

yeah it's like 21 fps all the time, EVERYONE is complaining

for me: +1 player in MP = -5-7fps

Same problem. In singleplayer, I get 50-60 fps with maxed settings. Once I join a multiplayer game, my FPS seems capped at 20-25, regardless of view distance and settings.

The main design goal of Arma 3 was to improve the rough edges Bohemia has become known for. In singleplayer, this goal is accomplished, but there is no worse "rough edge" than forced low/unplayable fps regardless of system.

I realize Arma games are different than standard first person shooter games, but none of them have linked server and client FPS causing problems, or desync issues, and games like Battlefield 3 deal with the same basic problems (vehicles spawning, etc), albeit on a much much smaller scale.

Arma 2 just had horrible netcode - I'm not a programmer or game designer so I don't know how it could be done better, but what I know is this; no other successful games out there have ever had to deal with EXPECTING enemy players or vehicles to skip around in place or for shots not to register until 30 seconds later - typical in Arma games because of desync. No other game has linked server and client FPS... for a good reason. Just porting the A2/OA netcode to Arma 3, which looks like what happened, isn't a good idea. They've tried to patch it up and fix it in the past with A2OA, which was tolerable, but really if Bohemia wants to get rid of those rough edges they really need to 100% resolve both problems by release, which would probably entail rewriting the entire netcode.

Sorry for large block of text... Just extremely annoyed.

Same here my framerate drops dramatically in multiplayer.

I experienced the same, but i have tried the WS.ARMA.SU servers where they run a Wasteland by Sa-Matra mod V1. and my fps was great on those servers. I dont know how?!... Why is the servers influence the client side fps anyway? Im not here to make them advertisement, but if any of you have issues with wasteland maps try these servers and watch the difference.

The dedicated server really shouldn't need a 16 core i9000 overclocked to 7 GHZ cooled by liquid nitrogen to allow the clients to get more than 30 FPS. But with ARMA, it does. In pretty much every other game you could run the server with a netbook and players would get the max fps their computer is capable of.

@Asaob I have tried like 10-15 different Wasteland servers yesterday and the best fps i got was 17fps, no matter what my graphical settings and resolution were. I'm talking everything set to minimum at 640x480. The ws.arma.su servers were no exception at 13fps.

Then I asked around on some servers how much fps people were getting and some had up to 60 and others had the same problem i had. Unfortunately people in side chat are usually jerks for some reason, so I didn't get a lot of info out of them.

It seems like this is an issue unrelated to CPU, GPU, RAM and Network. People with worse specs than mine CAN have better fps on MP servers. This is also the case in Arma2 (what a surprise...). It makes this issue only more frustrating than it already is.

My specs are:
Phenom II X4 945
GTX 660
8gb ddr3

Even thought about spending 300 bucks on upgrading to a 3570k, but seeing that people with vastly more powerful systems have the same problem makes me doubt that that would be a good investment.

I have a 3570k overclocked to 4.4 and the max I get right now in wasteland is 30 - so it doesn't really make that much of a difference. Come to think about it the performance at 3.6 is the same as 4.4 so the overclock doesn't make any difference IN MULTIPLAYER.

Wasteland =/= all multiplayer

Wasteland runs poorly NOT mulitplayer. Send a ticket to the people who made wasteland and stop wasting BIS resources and time on BS like this.

The low fps on mp servers is for me the most critical issue with arma3 at all - fixing this should have very high priority!

@Klax

you can have this problem on ANY MP Server, not just Wasteland. Wasteland is just popular, so it's a decent example.

There is a thread in the BIS forums that has 208 pages/2000+ posts and goes on for 4 (FOUR!) years now that is talking about this very problem in Arma 2 which now has carried over to Arma 3. This is not a wasteland issue at all, it lies deeply within the RV engine and hasn't been bothered to be fixed as far as we can tell. The only responses we got from the devs were "programming is hard", "it can't be fixed" and "it's not worth our time to fix it".

Why IS client FPS tied to server FPS anyway? Other games don't have this problem afaik...

And it IS TOTALLY WORTH THEIR TIME! Low FPS is one of the BIGGEST immersion killers any game could have; I'd rather have no reload animations than 25 fps in a game where aiming is required. In fact, this is the big issue that I was hoping ARMA 3 would fix, but I find that it's gotten even WORSE!

When I play BF3, the servers are supported by EA which in turn runs normal unmodified servers. The problem is that Arma 3 MP allows morons who modify the garbage out of their server and map and then you experience the garbage. Arma 3 should use at least Origin or another method of hosting servers and not allowing people to do it themselfes.

Tons of games allow modded dedicated servers... most of them in fact. Only the game giants like EA do that, and that's not to improve user experience but more to maintain control over everything. And as others have proven, the FPS issue occurs on all servers (modded or unmodded), it is just worse on wasteland. The linked client server fps is simpily bad design.

Exact same problem here I hope this is fixable :(

Same problem here, waiting for a fix ; max 20 FPS is not very playable. The more players on the server, the more FPS dropdown.

hey man the same, ineditor etc all is ood,but wehn i join a miltiplayer server, doenst matter with wich framret, than the frames go dow to 5 :(.

Try playing Sa-Matra instead, i seem to get much better fps there.
But low fps in multiplayer is a huge problem, in singleplayer i get 80-100 while in MP i enter with 70 and it drops down to 30-40 after being in the server for a while.

Yes I'm actually only playing on the Sa-Matra servers now but we are still far of performance we can get in showcases or in editor.

Intel Xeon3220 8mb cache oc to 3.6ghz, radeon hd 6970 oc, 4gb ddr2 1066, SSD.

its a bit inconsistent (playercount and mission wise) but most servers are unplayable, i want to be able to play on a 60player server (with no AI)with halfway decent fps or this game is not... a game lol.

p.s. i hope the first commenter will remove his comment some day...

T'was a pointless comment anyway.

Same problem here. Run single player fine, all other multi-player games no problem, e.g. Insurgency no lag 135 fps, Red Orchestra/Rising Storm 63 fps.

Arma 3 multi-player is an unplayable 10-15 fps mess, regardless of my settings or ping.

It's unplayable in Multiplayer. It's great that you've added this great map and content but it's all worth if no one can play it.

There are so many graphical and performance issues, and some of them exists since Arma 2. This should be your first priority !

Unplayable for me too. I get 8-15fps. Some SP missions are OK and give me 40-50fps but others are as bad as MP and run below 10fps (just happened with Op. Magic Carpet).

I get 40-60 fps in workshop missions single player, but when connecting to multiplayer servers it is always like 7-15 fps, and it is not getting better since spring at all
gtx 650 Ti, 4xcore AMD,8Gb ram

you have to consider one fact

  • regardless what FPS your system gets... you will be limited performance-wise to the fps server-side.
  • most client-side mods aren't optimized for MP... these lead to 20fps during use and constant 10-25fps drops every few seconds until that client disconnects

A3_Altis is far from being optimized for anything beyond simple MP_COOP missions
example:

  • I made/run a MSO_Stratis mission on my DED_Server = 40+fps...
  • Ported that mission over to Atlis = 18minute load / 0-1 fps Server-Side
  • Init 20 dynamically spawned IEDs on Altis = 10+minutes load / 0-1 fps

... because of this Client-Side = unplayable

But... recent patches have without doubt crippled performance client-side

  • recent patches cut AVG_fps in 1/2 (from 40+ to under 30)
  • no difference in FPS regardless the Video_Settings???????

+1 VOTE
Ive been testing these patches server-side...
look at the link below regarding a patch that appeared to fix the server-side 0-1 fps issues (the next patch broke again)

Why isn't this problem on top of the list?. only 450 votes, is it just us?

I don't care about bipods and shooting form vehicles while having 20 fps max.

Anyone knows someone who doesn't have this problem?

Yes i agree i get 50 - 60 fps on single player on high with

AMD Phenom II X6 3.2ghz
6gb DDR3 1333mhz

So why the fuck should i get 20 fps online? The only thing i see to fix this is to fix the serverside management code. Planetside 2 has a larger workload than arma 3 and still runs better online even when not in combat. Fix this. and what another guy said here about the devs response "programing is hard and its not worth our time to fix" is bullshit. If you guys cant be assed to fix this but add stupid things such as bipods and crap. Then i feel sorry for you.

it's the server. either too slow, not enough bandwidth or bad settings.

on a good server with not too many players and a not too demanding map, everything is fine.

as soon as I connect to a slow server, my rates are dropping and I can hear my PC going into idling. when playing multiplayer, your FPS can only be as high as the FPS of the server.

change to a better server, play another less demanding map. maybe this will improve with some performance tweaks.

I gotta disagree on this one, try playing some of Arma 3's default maps, they don't run slow, i play with 45-60 fps(same as singeplayer)when i host on most of them, however i haven't found a user made scenario that didn't lag with more than 10 players that had been running for a while. Still vote up tho if devs could fix it.

I get exactly 8 FPS in multiplayer on every server.

Storage device: 2x 1TB Wester Digital Black HDD @ 7200 RPM

In single player on Ultra I can get 40-60 FPS on every map.

CPU Utilization is always around 30%

GPU Utilization is NEVER above 27%

I have this issue. I play mostly on one server.

http://www.thelanbox.com.au/servers/
I play on annex server #5 and #4.

The servers are scripted although I don't know if it is considered heavy scripting. Ill leave that to your discretion, hladas.

Would it perhaps be worth while running your own servers with these missions that people are playing so that you can get a better understanding of the problem?

I updated my computer, with old setup there was not any stuttering in multiplayer servers and FPS was 50-80.
With new setup there is small freeze like every 500ms, totally _UNPLAYABLE_.

Old setup:
Win764bit, Intel DP67BG MB with Intel NIC, Intel 3770K, 16GB 1600MHz, Crucial C300 256GB SSD, EVGA GTX 580 3GB, Corsair A850 PWR

New setup:
Win764bit, Asrock Extreme 9/ac with Intel NIC, Intel 4770K, 16GB 2400MHz, Samsung 840 500GB SSD, INNO3D GTX 780 3GB Hybrid Accelero, Corsair A850 PWR

When I create internet or lan game, there is no stutter what so ever. If I join any server which is not hosted by same computer, there is this stutter issue.
Same thing happens on Arma2 too.
Tried other games like CS GO without any issues on any server.

This is definitely Arma3 and Arma2 issue and is closely related with networking.

Windows 7 64bit is fully updated (fresh install)
Intel nic 18.5 drivers updated
Nvidia latest 331.58 drivers updated
Asrock bios 1.80 updated

Tried also with old GTX 580 display adapter, still stuttering.
Tried to change network cards (MB has 2 intel nic), still stuttering.
Tried to change network speed and offload etc settings, still stuttering.
Tried to kill all extra processes from windows, still stuttering.
Tried to disable windows aero, still stuttering.
Tried to fresh A3 install into different HDD (WD Caviar), still stuttering.
Tried to put process priority to realtime/high, still stuttering.
Tried to change nvidia PowerManMode=Perf, still stuttering.
Tried to change to nvidia experience optimized settings, still stuttering.
Tried to BIOS disable integrated nic/wlan/infra/bt/serial, still stuttering.
Tried to underclock cpu, still stuttering.
Tried to start with -nosound parameter, still stuttering.
Tried to disable soundcard from BIOS and -nosound param, still stuttering.
Tried to unpark all cpu's, still stuttering.
Tried to change GPU PCIe slot, still stuttering.
Tried to disable intel SpeedStep, TurboBoost and HyperThreading, still stuttering.
Tried to disable CPU Thermal Throttling (even temp is 30C), still stuttering
Tried to update dev 1.05.111433 branch, still stuttering.

Any other game works just great, Arma2 or Arma3 is stuttering WHEN PLAYING IN DEDICATED SERVERS. Local server works great.
As a notice, same dedicated servers did work with old setup perfectly few hours earlier.

Network is performing good. Low latency, no jitter or pl and speeds around 80-90Mbit/s. Ingame there is no desync and ping looks ok.
Z-CPU and Z-GPU does not report any issues on HW while stuttering.
Tested SSD speeds read 534MB/s write 502MB/s.
Here is link for current setup performance test (3dmark)
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/1440574

Tested on several missions and two different server HW setups/locations:
Server 1: Intel 4770, 32GB RAM, Intel 240GB SSD, 1Gbit internet (<60ms ping)
Server 2: Intel 3770K @ 4.7GHz, 16GB RAM, Crucial 256GB SSD, 100Mbit internet (<20ms ping)
+ few random servers from ingamebrowser

Beta version or stable?

Soppa added a comment.Oct 22 2013, 4:07 PM

Stable and dev 1.05.111433 versions.

Im running soon out of ideas with this :o

While running, the sound of steps is not "stable", it sounds more like you are jumping.
Also it looks like you warp forward like every 0.5sec.
Things seems to happen like in "bursts".

Soppa added a comment.Oct 22 2013, 4:44 PM

Finally found what is causing this!
When server has battleye disabled, this stuttering/warping wont happen anymore.
Just dont understand why this didnt happened with old rig?
Could it be because SSD is so much faster than previous one?
BE asks to scan files and it chokes when SSD reads too fast.. sounds crazy.. dunno.

Hi soppa, I will make a try with some clanmate that got this problem and Ill tell you if works also for them. I dont think this is cause because your ssd is faster than before, I launch arma in whole ramdisk and got no problems. Maybe a connection issue?

Soppa added a comment.Oct 22 2013, 7:24 PM

Nope, I have tested many times connections. UDP and TCP has 0 packetloss and jitter is 0.4ms. Ping to server is <60ms and to other server <20ms.

It is something else..

Confirmed also on Arma2. When I disable Battleye from A2 server, have no stuttering. BE enabled, same kind of stuttering what you can see on Arma3 video above.

There seems to be related ticket already for this:
http://feedback.arma3.com/view.php?id=15182

You are right soppa, disabling BE all works fine with my mates that got this problem... Hopefully it's a password server so I can disable battleye but what have to do someone with a pubblic one?!

If you have that kind of stuttering what you see in the video above, here is a solution:

I have ESET Smart Security 7 and even disabling firewall and antivirus, there were still components running like HIPS (Host-based Intrusion Prevention System) which was scanning memory.

When I disable ADVANCED MEMORY SCANNER under HIPS, problem goes away.
ESET -> SETUP -> ENTER ADVANCED SETUP -> COMPUTER -> HIPS -> DISABLE ADVANCED MEMORY SCANNER

Karb added a comment.Oct 24 2013, 9:46 AM

I can confirm this..

I also use e-Set, and turned off HIPS as mentioned above.
Also enabled the 'gamer mode' in e-Set.

The in game lag has been substantially reduced.

From 5-10 FPS to 20-40 FPS.

My supervision and practice have defined some dependence of FPS. Not important on what settings game, ultra or below. When on the server it is less than 20 players, game go with FPS 40-60. It proceeds some hours and does not fall below. When players more than twenty, FPS in the first two hours from time to time falls from bulltrouts time. After two hours of game FPS lower than 40 with short interval more time holds low FPS. FPS can sometimes reach value 3-4. It is possible to leave and come on the server. It will give not long high FPS 40 but if game goes on the server more than 4-5 hours, the output and input in game will not allow to hold long FPS 40.
My settings of video in game are higher than mean value with high range of plotting. I on start in the editor receive 160-130 FPS, in 1-2 minutes circular omotr the horizon reduces FPS till 80-60.
The processor and its loading of 35% remain for FPS130 and for FPS40. There is assumption of falling of FPS during bad data exchange the server - the client of players in general, or even can entail such effects of one player with bad data exchange.

I made a month break of playing ArmA3 (because of GTA5, please don't hate me). Yesterday I decided to have fun in the mulitplayer again and I was curious, how the latest version would be.

I was horrified, how poorly optimised the game is, if you play with more than 20 players on a server. The framerate was between 20 and 30 - mostly 20 (playable but slow).

I played with ultra settings and decided to drop down my settings. After I reached the low settings (and disabled everything that is possible), I checked my FPS... still between 20 and 30 frames per second.

I hope, the developers will find a way to optimize the netcode (or better, they make an overhaul).

Lex added a comment.May 20 2015, 12:19 PM

All setting up video influences on urovn loadings of CPU, RAM and VRAM. If the level of settings is lower than an average, in network game FPS falls more.Interestingly why RAM never above 4,6-4,7gb?

Start the game Warfare CTI server is always high FPS 50-60. After 2hours 40 FPS, after 3 hours, and you can sometimes get 3-4 FPS. Solve this problem. Put priority on this. It worries and concerns of all. History of the problem persists for a long time, it makes people doubt the long term solution to the problem, attention to Arma 3 does not grow in those who remained in Arma2.

This is more server problem than client. Telling you as one of MP map developer. Lots of scripts and huge server uptime.

Here's a great idea!

How about turning down the Auto Intelligent (AI) units down to a reasonable skill level such as < 30%? (I'd like to recommend anywhere between 10-20% would mimic normal human capabilities.)

Has anybody noticed setting the levels to anything >= 30%, AI units tend to have no aiming disability, nor any delay in firing a weapon?

The CPU cycles saved on maps having large amounts of AI and players can likely be reduced by a large amount of CPU cycles.
