1. Put down a living quarter and summon some troops
2. Summon two light or heavy vehicles and command the troops to get in one
3. Command the troops to follow you.

Reproduction steps: recruit NPC soldiers from the living quarters and die by another NPC

Yeah I had the same problem on Xbox and had to manually land which ended in me crashing however I believe you had to push down on the left stick to auto hover
