This crossed my mind too :-)
Would be amazing as it snows the ground texture gradually got replaced by a snow texture and became slightly raised from the ground as if the snow was settling and getting deeper over time so that the characters feet sink into it.
Well using normal mapping and maybe displacement mapping, it could be possible to give the effect of snow on the ground piled up.
Good idea though, upvote++
wold be great to make snow as in Assassins Creed 3!
Snow as layer with displacement, afected and deformating by footsteps
I'm sorry but I am going to down-vote this. Stratis is a coastal region near the equator, thus accuracy would be off.
@Toast
It's 2035.. weather may change from now into 20 years.. i don't see the point of your comment
and since you can add islands, stratus is not necessarily the only place that will be used in the simulator
I don't think that the fact that Stratis is a supposed Mediterranean island disqualifies the point being made. He is arguing for an addition to the weather parameters in the editor section, which could be used on any map; polar or equatorial. Besides, there are plenty of places closer to the equator that have snow. It's altitude that matters not latitude.
Upvoted.
Expanded the title and description a little to merge this with the "seasons" ticket. Both are basically asking for the same thing.
This may be a little bit of a bad example, but here in the UK it is spring time. But we have been having weather to rival any winters we have ever had in the last 100 years.
30 years down the line we could end up tropical.
So kid18120 has a point. Keep voting this people! Remember it does not have to be voted just for Stratis but all maps in general.
This would open to a great deal of variety.
On one end of the spectrum: Think of a mission set on Greenland with sides fighting for territory because of oil. White as far as the eye could see and, except for your clothing and camuflage, only terrain to mask your movement.
On a more relevant/realistic note, playing in Siberia like settings could also be amazing.
Snowstorms that limit your view distance and dynamic effects with trees being covered in snow.
I'm in. Sign me up.
Up voting. The question isn't "Why would there be snow for Stratis?", the question is how many of you would like you to have a variety of islands/maps created by the community.
I believe snow would look x100 better than it did on ARMA 2 snow maps, and I'm up voting because it would be beneficial to the core game.
And it's the future. 20 years? I tell you what, each year the heavy snow has delayed itself in Britain for a month. It snowed heavily in March, before it was February. So yeah, I don't think the future should be ruled out!
Yes I completely agree with adding more climate conditions. The more options the better.
I think that would be a great idea. I also think that if possible, in the winter, spring and autumn (fall) months, the obvious river beds at in the bottom of valleys should have some sort of streams, just from a visual, environmental and realist point of view. They don't have to be raging torrents of water that are impossible to pass, just small streams that will support the eco-system which is seen on the island.
Also @Toast. The Mediterranean (where these Islands are based) is closer to Britain than the equator, it's not even in the tropics of Cancer or Capricorn.
I would be extremely happy if Amra3 had "snow skins" for vehicles etc
and at least one snow map!
Guys please vote this if you love arma!
@Toast,
not only this would be good for mission makers outside of the stratis and altis.
but FYI, I am from Israel, mediterranean climate and all
(even closer to the equator than Greece, though still not close to it at all),
and on some high mountains here, (well high being relative to Israel of course :))
we get snow in the winter.
so your point is not valid anyway.
Snow is unlikely for Greece, however changing the month in the editor should have some effect on the Mediterranean climate and the trees in particular.
I would like to see some snow but I think Bohemia will be saving that for their next game in the Arma series.
It would not be realistic to have snow on stratis or Altis buts it's a sandbox Militery sim.
Greece, Greece...
Community developing a lot of another islands, so SNOW! MUST HAVE! else /facepalm :(
i liked the NIM dynamic weather add-on for A2
if BIS could make it for A3 or even better that would be cool
I like the idea for a changing weather/climate system based around the seasons, as they already have something for phases of the moon in place.
That being said, Greece doesn't really get a lot of snow.......
However, I am aware that the community is at work with landmasses other than Greece, so I do see the purpose and use for such a system. The only problems would be anything concerning the "how" portion of implementation, and whether it would be worth it in the end.
How many people are working on A3, specifically the "requests"? How much processing power would seasonal conditions eat up? How long would it take to build/test/implement such a system? What potential bugs could erupt from seasons? How much editing and adjustments would have to be in place so that the simulation remains realistic? Would there have to be other unplanned skins/models/objects (think camos, vehicles with skis, water turning to ice) built in order for the AI and player to adapt to the environments?
I think it might be a bit much to request this late on in the development, but it could be an idea for a future expansion (or most likely the next engine).
They removed openable doors till after release. Why would they add snow? Does anyone know how much work it'd be?
They dont and neither do you, so you might aswell let developers decide what they will or wont decide to do. People are free to make feature suggestions.
Seasons? I want this... but then I also want the graphics and sound immersion that comes with it, like snow creaking under foot + footsteps in snow, frosted breath... ice forming on the lakes, freezing my nuts off when emerging from a dive in blue and so on. +1
The islands are near Greece, it's not tropical but in mediteranean sea, and not nearly the equator, what it was say, in winter it's possible in some conditions to snow...
There is no way it can snow in Lemnos (Altis). I live around 820 km north of Limnos (yes, I used Google maps) and a big snow happens every 50 or so years. Just 50 km south, it almost never snows and when it does the snow melts in a few hours.
Maybe you didn't notice, but all of the videos (except the last one which has no year) are from 2012. Maybe it snows every 50 years on Lemnos, too. I don't know.
Leave it for future DLCs and let the developers get centered in current issues. Anyways good point.
Well if it occurs every 50 years on Lemnos then surely its should occur in game every 50 years, or maybe have the ability to force snow on the island, or even get a rough prediction of Global Warming and see how that may affect the snow in the years on 2035+.
Or unrealisticly to real lifw but realistically in game (remember the real Lemnos is far bigger than Altis) is to halve the number of years the snow occurs, so maybe every 25 years or so.
I don't know how many times it's snowing or how regulary it is in Lemnos but read this
http://greekvegetarian.blogspot.fr/2013/07/kalamata-olive-and-walnut-dip-and.html?m=1
Last I checked, Altis (Based on Limnos which is in the mediterranean climate) does not have a noticeable winter. Maybe cloudy weather and very hard rains, but snow isn't really relevant in this area. Maybe more snow for the mountains though?
With full use of the already in game TrueSky weather effects, we can have snow! Ticket is here: http://feedback.arma3.com/view.php?id=13729
Snow is a bit much. Lots has to be added to cater for snow.
Anyhoo, I would like a truly dynamic weather button in the editor. Now we set start weather and forecasted weather (what weather it should turn into as time progresses). But a button that randomizes the weather continuously would be nice instead of going from good to bad or from bad to good weather.
Have a look at what I found:
http://weatherspark.com/averages/32194/Lemnos-Limnos-North-Aegean-Islands-Greece
This page will help with EVERYTHING climate related to Lemnos for Altis.
For the purpose of this ticket, scroll down and you will see where it says snow and clouds etc.
It very very rarely snows on Lemnos, but it has snowed before.
Didn't Arma 2 have snow? Granted, it didn't cover the land, but if you set it in December or January, and I'm not sure about this part, but I think you had to have the cloudy slider in editor pretty far, and then it would have a light snow, even on Takistan.
RainParticles and setRain now both have ability to simulate snow. The last bit of immersion is muting birds and insects sounds during snow would be updated with next data update
