In addition. The letters e and a also display as the same letter. It is not only small font sizes. There are also normal font sizes that display as similar to others.

In Editor you cannot see difference between brackets: ) ] }

I'd have to say this is more than a minor issue -- there's a big difference between 500m and 900m, and using a font for readouts which at one size is actually impossible to tell the difference between 500, 600, 800 and 900 is a serious UI error.

I know it looks nice and futuristic, but you really need to slap the graphic designer/typographer in the face and tell them: "No. Start again. Think carefully. It's Function over Form for readouts and critical numbers in a UI."

Have them look at OCR-A & OCR-B, the Deutsche Bundesbahn's font, Apple's Monaco font. Have them look at any LED/LCD Alarm clock. They are all textbook examples of clear differentiation of characters and numbers in a typeface.

Yea thats true Dead, this should probably be elevated quite a bit higher...

The whole UI should honor DPI, meaning that, for example, height of a character in pixels would be same no matter the resolution, XGA or FULL HD. This problem would be avoided then.

So problem is not font size. It is that those characters Look exactly the same at any size.

major issue sending a guy who you think is number 8 to do something and number 6 does it without the right gear and dies.

We are currently investigating the issue. To help us identify the reason for font's unreadability please provide exact information containing:

  • Location of the text (screenshot would be appreciated)
  • Video Options configuration (resolution, aspect ratio, interface size)

It looks like the font has been updated in the most recent patch. Readability is better on the numbers on the map (and in general with the new font).

Probably need others to confirm.

Nou added a comment.Mar 27 2013, 6:28 PM

To confirm, was the font changed or the font type? It looks like its using the Etelka font now, and before it was using Purista? Looking at the font PAA files, Purista still has the grouping issue with 5689B.

when I say in chat "watch your 6" it looks exactly like "8"

6 and 8 still look far too similar to tell apart, on range zeroing, in text messages appearing in the lower left corner of the screen (irritating when it's generated by the mission as part of the mission), in inventory/gear-menu (cannot tell if I have 6 mags or 8 mags, if I didn't know i'd think the 6.5mm rounds were 8.5mm) and in editor

I think that this is more of a major issue.
The font designer is really inexperienced or just really stupid.
While I agree that it looks rather nice, the letters just looks way too similar and hard to distinguish.

Characters 5689BS on a clear background. Interface size Normal @1280x1024 resolution: http://i.imgur.com/fuigdEw.jpg

None of them readable. Setting the size to Large helps a bit.

This qualifies as one of the most annoying problems that can be fixed very easily... A less "round" font will do.

I've been calling the SDAR a SOAR this whole time, how embarrassing.

So additional to 6's and 8's looking the same, D and O are the same.

Yes, font is very bad for numerals. Especially at low resolutions.

Zek added a comment.Aug 28 2013, 6:33 AM

Numbers 6 and 8 are the most confusing, in all resolutions.

When will this get fixed?

ceeeb added a comment.Aug 28 2013, 1:48 PM

l (lower case L) and I (upper case i) still look indistinguishable
6, 8 and 9 are still very similar

Font looks very bad to me, even in the menu/loading screen, with some characters looking quite faint and hard to read, besides the serious functionality issues that others have mentioned above.

Please fix!

  • start the game in windowed mode - you should see fonts correctly now
  • then switch to full screen mode by alt+enter

this works for me; strange thing is, that even in the case of bad and almost unreadable text, the screenshots made by fraps looks perfect

This is really a serious problem. I'm just playing Arma3 for a few weeks now but if there is one bug/problem that really annoys me it is the font.

Especially the 5 and 6 are way to similar, but also the 6 and 8. It's very hard to see the difference in the scope settings, but also in mods like altis life or king of the hill where I can't even read if something costs 55000 or 66000.

The big problem of the current font is that the bottom left part of the 5 goes already up again and almost builds a circle with the middle part of the 5 which makes it look pretty close to a 6. Same with the 6 where the top right goes way too much down to the middle like a 8.

A font where the numbers are way better readable is Calibri for example. Here is a screenshot of the current font with Calibri as an example next to it. The gap between the two red rectangles is way to small on the current one. If I play Arma 3 with a 1680x1050 resolution I almost need a magnifying glass to see the difference between a 5 and 6 or 6 and 8.

Please fix this problem or give us an option to use our own fonts while still keeping the game valid to join multiplayer servers.

Added a example screenshot, using small interface size. Arma 3 font is still far more difficult to read than "Courier New" font at similar screen size.

While it isn't nearly as bad as it was in alpha, it's definitely still a horrible font, as is apparent by the screenshot.

Almost 2016 and I can't see the difference between 6/8; D/O; I/l/1.

Finally! :)

Praise the lord! I hope they've done some research this time around :)

Added new screenshot comparing new and old ASCII characters taken in the 2d mission editor init field. Issues with the new font:

single and double quotation marks are now less distinguishable from each other. They are also blurry at small UI size.

(the equal symbol) has some stray grey pixels in top right corner at small size.

some characters look to have different spacing to the left/right. Eg lower case c, lower case e (not apparent in this screenshot) and digit 9 look too far right. digit 0 looks too far left.
