Major audio bugs with gunshots - 1.22 stable
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Hi, we are encountering some pretty strange and major audio bugs relating to gunshot sounds.

We are noticing that gunshot audio seems to cut off after a certain distance, around 1.1 to 1.3km away from the player the gunshots will suddenly become completely inaudible, even from large calibres.

Another strange thing is that once the audio cuts off, if you approach the player again, the audio doesn't seem to come back, they will remain shooting but you will hear no audio, even if you are directly next to the player shooting.

Here is a video example :

Steps To Reproduce

1, have somebody shoot continuously with a high calibre weapon like a FAL
2, increase your distance from that player
3, observe how the audio suddenly stops playing after a certain distance
4, bring yourself back towards that player and notice how the audio doesn't come back

Additional Information

An offtopic side note here would be that gunshot audio should be a bit louder and have more range in general (even after this bug is fixed).

For a while now a lot of the gunshot sounds even from higher calibres have been too quiet. The FAL for example even at around 2.2km is barely audible, that's a bit too low in my opinion

pls ;)

Good find Mike. I support the side note that audio is too low range from high calibers.

Edit: well even pistols that are a few hundred meters. When sometimes you have direct view of the guy shooting a pistol, and you cannot hear anything (not even low sound) it's a bit too ridiculous I think.

Yea I defintely agree, even with shotguns and SMGs particularly. People can be blasting shots like 1km from you and you often won't even hear it.

The audio used to be amazing but around the time of the Namalsk release they made HUGE changes to the gunshot audio, basically they drastically reduced the audible range of everything, after some community backlash they boosted the audio a bit more but they never really returned it to its former glory :(

Nice catch. I also feel like the bullet snap sounds are way too quiet.

Yep, snap and impact sounds are both too quiet, agree.

Snaps should really be much more of an actual crack rather than just a little tap

Thanks for the quick response and hard work Geez and the QA team, as always <3

I agree. High Calibres are too quiet. Makes no sense. Need to be loud again.

From our testing on our server, the audio seems to be "locked" inside the network bubble as of patch 1.22.
networkRangeDistantEffect = 4000; // network bubble distance for spawn of effects (currently only sound effects), set in meters, default value if not set. Is still working however not above 1.1k
We tested to set -1 which removed all sound which shows the command is still working but you can't increase it to over 1.1k
We usually have it set to 2500

Please look into this asap as no sounds beyond the 1.1k range makes all servers feel lifeless and more boring than what they are supposed to be.

I wonder if it is related to what me and my group have experienced for over a year or two.
We have had all sorts of sounds only play for 1 or few.
Once we had 1 out of 7 hearing gun shots within 1000m from us.

The same goes for helicopter crashes, wolfs and other sounds.
