Well that's like, your opinion, man. Personally I like high density areas with high risk/reward and some guaranteed action with a bit of server hopping.
Splitting axe or crow bar kills in 2 hits to body, fire axe in 1 hit to body. Before you get one of those just use sprint (double tap forward) and you run 50% faster than the zoombies and easily put distance between you and them. Also consider less populated areas before you get a weapon.
crowbar takes 3 body hits, splitting axe 2 body hits, fire axe 1 body hit.
Don't see what the problem is. Seems intended and reasonable progression.
press forward twice to run away from any zoombies or get an good melee weapon and kill them in 2 hits or a fireaxe and kill them in one hit.
-Not that rare
-Lots of food available without can opener (including some cans)
-Can use other objects to open cans
