I encountered the same issue as well. Once both shells are spent, the GUI continues to show the shell icon attached to the gun with 0 shells. The context menu does not include the option to 'Eject' the shells either.

If anything, there will be a lot more before the game is done. This is not a bug. It is part of the building of the game. Eventually, they will add mechanics that will allow you to sneak past zombies (sometimes).

Also, the SKS ammo ejected stack cannot be combined with other stacks.

Many aspects of the game are based on elements of real-world survival. Most likely, not being able to set a way point is intended...and I hope they leave it that way.
Map reading is a good skill to have anyway. Why not learn it in a game instead of getting lost in the middle of nowhere in real life?
