Millions of Fake Players in DayZ: Online Inflation and Chaos in the Server List
Feedback, NormalPublic

Description

Hello, dear developers of DayZ!

I recently developed server analytics, available on https://ts4ta.com, and discovered some surprising results. According to Steam, the current online player count is about 55,000. However, analyzing the server data reveals entirely different numbers:

  • 1,014,605 bots.
  • 303,213 artificially inflated players (not bots).
  • 224,688 players waiting in server queues.

In total, this adds up to over 1.5 million "players", which is far beyond the official statistics shown on Steam.

Here are a few questions:

  1. How is it possible that the number of "players" visible in the launcher and on servers exceeds the official Steam data so drastically?
  2. What is your stance on the current issue of player count inflation on community servers? Based on my analysis, over 5,000 servers are manipulating their numbers, with a significant portion of players ending up on such servers.
  3. How are players expected to find quality servers to play on when:
    • Official servers are often plagued by cheaters and performance issues?
    • Community servers heavily inflate their player counts?
  4. Why not implement a filtering and verification system in the launcher to exclude servers that engage in these practices? It seems like a straightforward step that could greatly improve the quality of the game and user experience.

I'm not a professional programmer, but I managed to create an analytics prototype in just a few evenings, which uncovered this massive issue. While my calculations might not be perfect (the real player count might be even higher when adjusted for inflation), it’s clear that the problem with artificial inflation is critical. Players deserve a better approach to server management.

Can you comment on this situation and share any plans to improve the launcher and combat the manipulation of player counts?

Thank you in advance for your response!

This happens constantly. I believe many players have noticed servers showing 255/255 players.

Additional Information

I’ve been collecting this data for a long time. It’s disheartening to see this issue persist, to the point where I lost interest in playing. However, I finally found time to publicly ask you about this.

This is something we had to deal with alot (as server owners and players).
There are a few known servers that do inflate player count artificially and they end up at the top when searching for servers because they got the most players which is extremely unfair for legit servers that might actually bring or would bring value to the players.

Please look into this BI devs <3

BI, if you are really interested in fixing this problem, I think you know what to do.
If you want, write me an email, I will share my observations, it will not force you to change the whole system, it will just allow you to calculate the level of trust in the server.

Ffs.. Where is the problem to implement the server list fetching logic in a same/similar way DZSA did?
They are crawling servers from the Steam API (https://api.steampowered.com/IGameServersService/GetServerList/v1/) which cannot be spoofed that easily as direct A2S queries.

You guys (BI devs) have implemented pretty solid solution for the official server verification with a pub/private keys, but you can't fix community servers list? ... Bullshit, I don't believe in that, you just don't give a sh** about this issue and that's it.

BTW Chocopos is one of the people that did that for god knows how long, he had namalsk servers with fake playercount! Before he took down his servers he begged for donations via ingame messages!
Talking about irony! You think you can remove your comment but i still have it! You should be ashamed of yourself chocopos, because you are part of this problem!!!

The DayZ Community Server List's fake server issue has persisted for years. During this time, I've witnessed many community members reporting this problem to the officials, yet there has never been a direct response. I've reported this issue multiple times only to receive warnings and bans. As Geez mentioned, the officials have shown no progress in addressing this problem.

1.Does Bohemia Interactive have the technical capability to solve this issue? Absolutely yes. In the Asian region, a CN server had been creating fake servers and registering them on the official channel for over 2 years, claiming official partnership and authorization. While this specific case was resolved on October 15, 2024, the broader community list issue remains unsolved.

2.These fake servers operate at minimal cost - a single cloud server with 2 cores and 2GB RAM can host 300-500 fake servers displaying 255/255 players. This is deeply unfair as legitimate servers get buried and become virtually invisible to potential players.

3.The official's indifference to fake community servers has led many to exploit the DayZLauncher community list for profit. They register numerous fake servers to advertise other games, luring players into their community groups only to redirect them to different games, causing many DayZ newcomers to leave the game entirely.

4.The current situation in CN is dire - the community channel is completely dominated by one group of servers. More alarmingly, they exploit hl1master.steampowered.com and hl2master.steampowered.com for DayZ (221100) game registration scanning. When they detect active servers, they launch DDOS/CC attacks, forcing other servers to shut down. This malicious practice drives players to their servers, creating a monopoly through intimidation.
Serious Impact and Consequences:

1.Steam API's openness makes creating fake servers too simple, especially with AI assistance. The official's inaction has shifted focus from developing interesting mods to creating fake servers for traffic. While this artificially inflates DayZ's player numbers, it severely damages the game's reputation, leading to refunds and player abandonment.

2.istings, they often require VPN services and suffer from frequent cheating. Limited human resources result in delayed moderation. Moreover, players unable to use VPNs turn to community servers, only to gradually leave due to the current situation.

  1. Many interesting servers with unique content cannot be discovered due to fake server listings, leading to their eventual closure from lack of new players.

I love DayZ for its open modding capabilities that allow us to create diverse and engaging gameplay experiences. I believe that improving the game's ecosystem and increasing its visibility will attract more players to purchase and enjoy this game!
I sincerely hope the officials will address this issue directly and take action to resolve the fake server problem in the community list. This would greatly improve the overall community environment and help more people discover DayZ.

Well, the developers absolutely don’t care about this clownery in their own launcher ;)

But look - they fixed official server listing by implementing pub-key verification :D

whats wrong with 255/60 server 😁

We need to fight mirrors the same way they do in Rust and ban servers for fake online

Hello everyone, I am a server owner from China, and the situation is far worse than what they describe. China can no longer run servers properly. As soon as your server's player count exceeds 10, you will face endless attacks. Servers that once claimed to be officially authorized by CN have now moved to Hong Kong, and their plastic bottles are worth 3 RMB. They even claim to be official staff. Players in the CN community can no longer search for any other servers. They are covering up cheating, eating away at players' bases, and charging protection fees. I hope someone will notice this. China is in deep trouble. Please help us.

Is this data serious? 10,000 players online, but over 50,000 servers? The number of servers is several times the number of online players!

The latest version of DayZ Exp's Launcher still sees a large number of fake servers, are you sure the opinions have been fixed?

respond and clarify the situation(pls), coz this is huge

LAUNCHER
Fixed: Launcher displayed thousands of fake servers in the Community tab, affecting the visibility of legitimate servers
Fixed: "too many mods" string in launcher was not localized
Unresolved, many fake servers

Need to dial that filter back the other way now...

Seeing the same.

First search gave me 600 total,
second was 450
3rd was 1600

Also, now for some reason nothing shows till I hit the refresh icon, and sometimes it flicks tabs to my Favourites screen after 100 or so servers shown.

@mrdarn I think the launcher refreshes 60 seconds after start.
if you leave it idle, no servers load then all of a sudden it flashes and starts loading your favs.
