Some footstep sounds are played behind player
Reviewed, NormalPublic

Description

This seems to have been addresses a couple of versions ago, but it actually caused this issue. For most people that I have talked to, this issue was not present before it has been addressed.

As of today, some footstep sounds are played behind the player, which makes it sound like someone is chasing you. Especially on Tanoa this can be easily reproduced while running through the jungle. Can upload a video if needed.

Saw this ticket here which the same report, which has been closed due to inactivity, but problem is present as of today in vanilla Arma.

Hello.

A video would be nice. Since we do not have all of the headsets that can be used I will try to at least simulate your settings., so could you please send me your headset settings?

Intel Core i7 4790K, problem persists with analog no-name headset (Onboard Realtek HD Audio), Logitech g920 (Logitech USB Audio) and Astro A50 (Vanilla Windows USB Driver).

Feary It was meant for ExileMod.

You have a Logitech, good that might help we use Logitech G430.

Do you have Logitech Gaming software installed?

Been only forwarding the issue, since I constantly hear people complaining about it and we also watch a lot of Twitch streams where this issue is present. Tried to get more people to upload specs and a video, but without luck so far.

Here is a video I just made. The footsteps sound like they are played right below the player, as it should be. At least on this surface type. But I think what feels so odd is that the collision sound with the foliage stays at the same position, making it sound like it is behind you. Well, because it actually is:

Does that point you into the right direction?

Uploaded a second one. This time it is the regular ground clutter sounds played "behind":

Whenever I try to load the links with the videos YT says that "This video is unavailable".

Thanks that is better. We will have a look at this and let you know if anything can be done about it.

Any there any news about this already?

Not yet I am afraid, we send it to our audio guys to have a look at it now we have to wait.

Hello all.

From the video's we seem to be able to conclude that this is not a footstep issue but it concerns the sound of foliage rustles. The described experience is caused by the camera position and how sound is distributed over the Left and Right channels based on direction and distance and the fact that the foliage sound sources do not move along with the player in relation to the camera.

To further clarify:

When at a 90 degree angle to the left of your character the sounds that were in the centre before, will now be in your right channel. As the distance between camera and sound sources increases the sound of rustling foliage attenuates thus creating the illusion of a "trail of sound" behind the character. The footsteps themselves are centred because the sound source moves along with the character. This is not the case with foliage.

We are aware of this limitation for quite some time, however, I'm sorry to say that this is currently not within our short-term scope of fixes.

Should you have any questions please let me know.
BW

Thank you for the response. I am sorry that no short-term solution is planned. Would it be possible to "attach" the foliage rustle sound to the player position as well in a long-term fix?

From what I understand it's an old design and it is working like this since Arma 2.

Reviewing and hopefully improving this behaviour is on our list of cases we want to address.

When there are resources available these cases are evaluated and prioritized. I'm sorry to say that I cannot really predict if and when this particular issue can be addressed at all. My apologies for not having a more satisfying answer to your queries at this time.
