Hi! Since the 0.51 stable update all compasses work like this for me. I checked damaged, Worn and Pristine as well. The good news is, since than I learned to navigate based on the sun :D

For me it happend first about three days ago. Since then it is the same all the time. It doesn't matter if it is a Canteen, or a Waterbottle. I get it first with stable version, but today I switched to Exp version and it is the same.
