I'm new to this but here are my two cents.
I would love to see character customization more than just a head, glasses and a voice, meaning body type and gender etc. and I believe the units you fight alongside and against should be more diverse in that aspect. not every soldier is the same size and build after all. I'm not saying BI should add an EVE online style character creation menu (though it would be cool with some restrictions, these are soldiers after all, they gotta be built for it.) I just like to see diversity. That's asking for a lot, but in my opinion simply adding a single female model with a few heads and a few voice actors isn't, sure they'll have to rig the gear and what-not but it can be done somewhat easily with the work they've done so far.
Now, if you're like me, and have a monitor that's not optimal for gaming, then when your shooting, you cant really make out exactly what the enemy looks like, and if they were a woman they wouldn't look all that different in full gear, after proper military training. Even so, for those who would feel discouraged to fire at a woman when ordered, that adds a whole new layer, in my opinion, of depth to the game: maybe, because you hesitated, she took out two of your squad before you were able to pull the trigger, or maybe a team member had to do it instead of you.
If BI does it right, a female soldier not wearing any gear, wont look much different from a male in the same situation. they'll be muscular because they're soldiers, and they are not gonna be in a bra and panties, they will be wearing a t-shirt and briefs. that can be considered an overly sexual image if that's how you think, but the same can be said for men.
Idiots are Idiots whether they have access to a male avatar or a female one. They can RP a prostitute as a male. If the idiots are not getting banned or alternatively dealt with, the problems will persist either way.
As far as women serving in the military, they can serve on the front lines in countries including our own and the numbers are growing. Why wouldn't they in 20 years?

I hope to see at least a decent mod, but preferably an official update to play as, and alongside, female soldiers in the near future. It would make the game much more enjoyable for me.
If BI is having funding issues they ought to open up donations for proposed content, I'd throw money at em' and I'm other sure people would get on board as well.
