Same problem happens to me. Re-logging makes the empty can appear so I can red rid of it. Happens on all servers, not just hardcore. Haven't tried the removal of the item of clothing yet, but I'm hesitant to do this now, as I put my M4 on the ground the other day and it disappeared, couldn't get it back :(
