You can actually tell how much blood you have by your vision, the blurrier it gets, the less blood you have.

Also of note, when I spawned in the new area, there were roughly eight live survivors standing around, even though there were only 3 total players including me on the server. They were survivors, not zombies, and they were all in the same area I spawned in. They also all appeared to look exactly like my player character looked.
