Aerial vehicles need audible warning warning system for AA missiles
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

So, after some short testing it seems, not only do flares have little effect unless they're hit very early (during the target is locking you) the only warning that is given is a small visual cue which, in most cases, doesn't really help if you're focused on flying when it happens.

Currently IRL, pretty much all modern aircraft, both fixed and rotary have Missile Warning Systems which create audible and visual cues, with many automatically firing flares upon detection of a missile lock.

Now i'm not saying a indepth and thorough system is needed, just an added audible cue for lock (a beeping tone), a separate one for launch (a faster paced or longer beeping/tone) with the option to allow automatic firing of flares.

I strongly agree with you.

yes. this is definitely needed

Would be strange if they would leave it like this, Arma 2 is better at it.

Audio is definitely needed.

Only on the appropriate missiles. MANPADS usually use IR seekers, which are not detectable by the target during lock. However, the launch signature *may* be detected (but not everytime). On a missile lock, the helicopter should thus dispense chaffs, not flares.

If it detects a launch, it would dispense both flares and chaffs.

Otherway round, IR seekers are 'distracted' by flared, Radar guided are confused by Chaff.

Though we don't have chaff anyway at the moment.

I don't know at what stage the lock/firing is detected but pretty much all aircraft have sensors that can detect the launch and fire countermesures, for US helicopters this is the CMWS, usually in combination with the ALQ-144 jammer there's other various systems too for LASER and radar detection.

Make it like ARMA 2.

When the missile is away you get the big red M on the radar and an audible beeping noise.

Or make it even more realistic :P(like someone said - infra-red guided missiles - only launch is detected - radar guided - locking also).
Furthermore dumping flares would have to interrupt ir locking mechanism! EVEN BF has that!

@Scarecrow: I think you misread me. If the chopper detects a missile lock, it's certainly a radar guided missile, thus it should dispense chaffs.

If the chopper detects a missile launch, it can be a radar guided, thermal guided or wire guided missile (maybe even unguided rocket) and therefore should dispense both flares and chaffs to maximise its odds.

Since arma is not flight simulator I guess its not possible to model all those systems. IR missles cant be detected by the helicopter or airplane so there should not be any warning on the incoming missle. What missles have is smoke trail till engine burns out... so you should add smoke trails behind missles so they can be vissualy detected as it is in real life. Radar guided missles are detectable by aircraft RWR and can be tracked or athleast implementing of sound signal should be made.Laser energy can also be detected by some RWR so if aircraft is being painted by a laser you should see it.

I think the chopper can detect a launch.

upvoted!

i will just quote Byku's comment:

It would also be good if they provided an audible warning for any part that was heavily damaged and nearing failure.

This is a necessary thing to incorporate. Almost EVERY combat aircraft has a missile warning system and the majority of them are tied in with the chaff/flare system. For example, the AAR-47 system is tied into the AN/ALE-47 system.

I made a script for this that uses real US military alarms for incoming missile detection. Anyone interested?

I think this has been resolved on the Dev build. Can anyone confirm?

Confirmed, houston, we have a beeping.

Resolved, Tones added for lock and missile.
