Left handed weapons
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Could a gameplay option be added to switch player characters from default right handed firing to left handed firing? I'm sure both sides of the weapon are modeled after all. =P

thx!

I'm a "righty", but if I were a "lefty" I would want this feature, so I voted up.

If I'm not wrong this would be a lot of animations have to be done again for lefties, I don't think it would be efficient to do so...

One awesome thing though would be the ability to change from left to right hand in CQB, like in IRL is often done...

i would imagine that the animations could just be mirrored, and it would add at least a little difference because suddenly playing on a team with one lefty and one righty they take different wall sides because of how much you have to expose yourself.

Everything could be mirrored. This is not difficult to do. Hell you could use a console command in Source games to do it with any first person model.

Like BearMilitia pointed out, something as simple as being left or right handed can have a big effect in your combat effectiveness when working as part of a fire team. I'm voting this up as well!

I hadnt even considered the tactical applications!

GJ guys

i like the idea of switching hands for CQB ... but it would also be a lot of work to revisit most animations for this.

though this feature would be great to have for urban fire fights

Why do so many people think that it would require new animations? Lefties do everything exactly the same as Righties, but mirrored. I remember when the first Counter Strike beta (bear with me) was released the weapons were all in the left hand. Later the side was switched to right.

I want this as a feature as a left handed person, but I think that other things have priority. It would be interesting to see some Dev feedback on this.

I'm a lefty, and this would really help me feel more intuitive in the game. At the moment, I'm having to correct myself from going to the "wrong" side of cover. Please, BIS, at least investigate this issue, and see if it is possible to implement it without it causing too much trouble.

I think we have some bigger fish to fry here guys.

military trains you to fire from right even if you're left handed you brainless uneducated morons. enjoy that hot brass or hot gas hitting your face firing a weapon left handed.

sigh...

@johncage
Wrong. Eye-dominance is a major factor, for most people their right eye is dominant, which goes along with right handedness (with very few exceptions). Lefties use their left eye. In this day and age, there are brass deflectors available (M4/M16) or the firearms can be modified to fit left handed shooters.

Older rifles (M14, also M16-A1) do not offer such options, but infantry training has come a long way since the 1960's, which you seem to be referring to.

No one who has combat effectiveness on his mind would suggest that left handed people should just fire with their right hand.

Would be nice to be able to do a tactical transition for right-side vs. left-side shooting.

we are waiting for the left handed mode!!

Down voted. One of the devs explained it better on the forums, but the jest of it was "not gonna happen, because we'd have to add around 1200 new animations/models for it".

scrim, do you have the link of the dev post? I would be really interested in reading it!

scrim added a comment.Mar 29 2013, 8:04 PM

Yeah, I'll link to it in a new post shortly.

Here it is (quote pettka):
"The issue is that this isn't just about mirroring the animations, it would require different models (as putting rifle on left shoulder would put it on the right one in old model), completely new config (some 1200+ classes with connections) with transitions to right handed and back. I don't want do discourage any community member from such effort, but it would take more than just a nick of time"

I still want left handed soldiers. :D

Cheers, I searched quite a lot on the forums without finding it. And of course it turns out to be one of the threads I looked in, but missed the post.

Thanks both pops and scrim! What does the "approved" tag mean then?

"Splinter Cell" games had this feature. You could switch from left to right on the fly with the push of a button. I loved it and would like it in ARMA as well.

Sorry guys, the "approved" status does not mean the request has been approved by the devs. It's just a way for moderators to mark a ticket as well-formed.

Since this status will probably cause a lot of confusion (false hopes etc.) I'm setting these back to "new" until the devs decide what to do with them.

AWSOME IDEA NOT TO HARD... and im left handed

i don't know why people thumbs down, obviously they are right handed and don't understand how left players (like me) hate play with right handed view.

scrim added a comment.Mar 30 2013, 4:20 PM

Spycho: YES IT IS HARD, A DEV WAS QUOTED AS SAYING JUST THAT IN A NOTE JUST A LITTLE ABOVE YOURS.

German: Maybe because as the dev said, it'd be extremelly time consuming for something very small. +1200 new things to add is like a DLC just for the sake of allowing people to change from right to left handed shooting.

@scrim or they just can do a mirror effect. I think that's not hard.

scrim added a comment.Mar 30 2013, 5:09 PM

Know what, you have the link, so why don't you go there and tell the dev he's got no idea what he's talking about.

I'm a lefty myself and I would really like to see this feature implemented. Unfortunately, making it happen will NOT be as simple as mirroring the character's animations since you would have to assume that everything being used, such as the guns, are symmetrical (which they aren't, for the most part). If BIS were to mirror the animations, we should expect some strange consequences such as inverted guns and reversed text.

As in real life - I'd like to see it being switchable.
Not only when Stepping Out Left.

Up Voted

I would like to see this implemented, CBQ transitions would be more fluid switching from weapons side to reaction side and urban prone in reaction side not exposing too much.

This suggestion was processed by our team and will be looked into. We thank you for your feedback.

Thanks Thales :)

If the Oculus Rift were to be implemented and one eye sighting were to become an option, as it is in real life, then I would have a very poor time trying to close my left eye, as it isn't my dominant one. This isn't an issue I would even worry about until Rift support is added, so it shouldn't be put much effort into until then in my opinion.

Not gonna happen. This would be ridiculously costly and difficult due to nature of the animation engine.
