if you drag an item all the way to the left you cant drop it unless its in the vicinity box, even though the item box is green. if there are other item (inventory) boxes, like a fire or clothing that take up the whole vicinity box, you can only drop the item if you drag it to the small grey part of the vicinity box.

I dont know if this is a bug or update, but its really inconvenient for dropping lots of items
