Massive size of log files
Feedback, NormalPublic

Description

Hello,

In latest version of the game, if you log off with alt+f4 or similar kind, you will see a crash report that has been added lately.
Also, if you play on DZSA (modded dayz) and press exit and close the game normally, it will still show the crash report.

Now, the crash report says this:

Following files will be included in the report (if they exist):
	C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\DayZ\dxDiag.txt
	C:/Users/<username>/AppData/Local/DayZ/DayZ_x64_<date>.RPT
	C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\DayZ\crash_<date>.log
	C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\DayZ\script_<date>.log
	C:/Users/<username>/AppData/Local/DayZ/DayZ_x64_<date>.mdmp

Which, if you view these files, this files can take up to 100gb's of space. When i told all of my friends which they had no space left in their harddrive, they shocked to see 100's of gigabytes of log files.

The problem is actually not the big sizes, if game crashes, it logs the entire gameplay, so if you play 6 hours, i can say it will make 5gb of log file, if you play 30 mins, it will generate 500mb log file upon crash.

The problem is that whenever you ALT+F4 or exit via in-game, the crash-reporter opens up and saves the log files. I think this is a major issue because alot of players have limited spaces on their pc's and probably few people know this issue so i came here to make a report.

Hello,

I want to add this to the feedback.

https://feedback.bistudio.com/T172966

It is closed and tagged as "Closed, Resolved", but yet i cannot see any real solutions.

People know that you can remove the log files. But many players arent aware of this issue and they may have massive size of log files.

My suggestion is to make logging default to false, and option to turn it on via in-game settings or in launcher.

Hello estein.
The solution is to periodically clear the logs as described in the other ticket. However I will forward this to the devs as suggestion if there is something that could be done.

Geez

Hello Geez,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, the solution is clearing logs via clicking verify game button in Steam. But many players are not going to do this because they are not aware of this log issue.

You can ask a normal DayZ player if they are clearing their logs, they will 100% reply with "what are the logs?"

I found out this log size issue by running wiztree program and saw dayz folder was taking alot of space. No one told me of this issue. And i wasnt aware of "periodically" clearing of the logs was a thing.

Thanks.

The problem is not removing the log files. It's just unacceptable that a game within a few hours writes 3GB of data to my drive every time I play. This game is out of alpha and should not be doing this as default behaviour. The player does not care about any of those logs. It's only relevant to mod developers. It should be disabled by default and have an optional parameter to enable it. I play Arma 3 with over 100 mods and nothing like this ever happens. This is ridiculous.
