I've noticed this in patch 1.23 and now in EXP 1.24 as well that hotkeyed items don't go back into their container. Even when there's enough space in the container (for example: Teddy bears, protective cases, cooking pots etc. etc.)
When there's not enough space left elsewhere in your inventory, the item stays in your hands and simply won't go back into your inventory at all.

Funnily enough i noticed this yesterday but put it down to the fact i was playing a server where you need to remove a bag to access it's contents. My bandages were hotkeyed but in a cooking pot in my bag. Other hotkeyed items from the bag would go back but i had to manually remove the bag and pot to replace the bandages.
