Huge dip in performance & GPU usage when looking at city
Reviewed, NormalPublic

Description

Booting up DayZ today for the first time in a few months and I notice the following:

  • looking at city (here Berezino) GPU usage falls to sub 50% leading massive drop in FPS (barely above 60)
  • looking away from the city GPU usage goes op to 99% and FPS to 140 (which my cap)
  • tested on server The Calm Deathmatch which has 0 mods

Current specs:

  • cpu: AMD 5600X
  • gpu: AMD 6800XT
  • ram: 32gb
  • all drivers up to date

I did not notice this issue with my older AMD 5700xt GPU when I last played the game a few months back.

Here is a clip showing the problem, pay attention to the overlay on the top right which shows FPS and GPU usage (GPU UTIL.) (/!\ LOUD SHOTS /!\):

Not sure if this is the case here, but this is usually a problem in DM servers ( which don't drastically reduce body despawn time ), since bodies do not despawn for a long time and there's enormous amount of "loot" laying around ( aka, weapons from dead players on the ground). Also each dead body playing audio of flies flying over them...

This could explain a FPS drop, but afaik not a drop by 50% of GPU usage.
I tried it on official as well and can confirm the issue is present there as well.

I'm not really sure if this is an issue but rather just how DayZ is. The difference between looking at a town with complex models and high object density vs an open field with trees will always show quite a bit FPS difference. Just a matter of loading more stuff in the scene.

I'm not sure about the GPU utilisation

You could try resetting your config file. For some reason resetting the dayz folder can provide an increase in FPS / stability aswell as fixing some weird issues in general.

Go to documents and delete the entire DayZ folder. When you launch the game it will generate a new folder (your in game settings will be reset). That could help

Yes I understand how the complexity of a city + density of players/loot might affect performance vs an open empty field.
But here it's not what is happening. For whatever reason when looking at cities something tells the GPU to chill out instead of pumping frames.
And I am fairly certain it's not a quirk in the overlay because my temperatures drop as well (when looking at cities).

I tried to delete the whole content of the config folder (and steam cloud is deactivated) but it did not change anything.

@Geez Does status "reviewed" means "we'll handle it" (which it doesn't sound like) or "let's slip it under the rug" ? This kills the enjoyment out of the game for me and a straight answer would save me time and disk space.

The reviewed status in this case is used as "we have read your ticket, we see the behaviour but currently I do not have any information that I could provide or whether this will be addressed"

Ompff...
I run a DM server, bodies are set to despawn in 3 mins because of this!!

@Geez any updates on this issue, typically when im in the forest i will get 99% gpu usage and great fps, but when i look at cities like elektro, cherno, topolin my fps drops like crazy along with typically a 50-60% gpu usage, would make dayz more enjoyable for us AMD users! thanks

I can confirm. This issue is the same for me sapphire 6950x, in forests big open areas 80*% gpu usage, in fights, cities etc it sits between 40/60 usage, and makes it feel like huge input lag. Unplayable

/@Geez can we please get an update, still happening 16/11/23

Same struggles.

GPU utilization drops to the 10s in many locations and when that dips so does the FPS. Setting the graphic presets to poor/low sometimes help but it brings drawbacks as you cannot see through windows from a certain distance.

If AMD users had access to Vulkan api support for the game there would be no utilisation issues. Battleye also blocks DXVK translation layer mod from DX11 → Vulkan which could also be a workaround for this issue. Even DX12 support for the game would help AMD users but not as much as Vulkan support.

Still having the same issue, I would understand if it was a small issue, but it literally affects 90% of amd users can u guys not look into it ???
