High ping on local server
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

To test my mods I run a local server on the same computer than the game.
I noticed that the ping is always around 100, I was expecting a low value as the server and the game are on the same computer.

Is there a reason for the ping to be so high?
Can we do something to lower it?

I delay one of my mod since a long time because of too much desync in vehicles during my local tests.
I only noticed today (after reading a reddit post) that the ping was so high (I usually automatically join without using main menu).

It would be very helpful if a solution can be find.

@Geez Can this be escalated? I've been seeing the same issue and it's disconcerting to see such high ping for a machine that is literally either the on the same LAN or the same PC.

Hello Liven and DaGreekGeek.

Ping displayed is the ping returned by Steam. Obviously in this case, Steam's estimate for ping is too high, but Steam's estimates of ping are just that, estimates, based on the route they expect network traffic to take between the client and server.
We guess they don't handle estimates between client and servers on the same LAN well.
Regardless, there is nothing that needs to be done, since the ping isn't actually high, it just looks high.
If you want the actual ping you are welcome to ping your local server using powershell or some similar tool.
