DayZ's most important graphics issues.
Reviewed, NormalPublic

Description

At current patch DayZ doesnt look as good as it did back in first versions of the game, some of settings got downgraded, some weirdly implemented, some just arent fitting current version. I will list all of my complains bellow.
FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT
Annoying HDR, super bright effect. To show you how annoying is that i will have to use screenshots.

At the last screenshot, we can see both super bright screen caused by looking at the ground that reflects light and weird tree shadows at noon. Since thats how i run most of my time in forrests and it looks just simply so bad. Its not as bad once its later or earlier but in noon that effect is just the worst thing in the game. Please let us turn it off.
The second thing that isnt really strongest part of DayZ's graphics is ambient occlusion
It seems to be looking like that since pretty much relase of 0.63 into beta (it wasnt like that in 0.63 stress tests or first content patch tho). Its literally just making corners a little darker (i think it looks so bad because of that gamma abuse fix) and that darker parts are simply pixelated. The original ambient occlusion was looking so much better, corners of any objects (corners in buildings, on characters clothes, on grass) were really dark, it made buildings feel like they are actually abandoned for a long time and there is no light. It just looked so much better, please give us back old AO, it looked just so good. Nobody will miss current one. (thats some stolen screenshot from video, sorry for quality, second one is made by me)

Third and last problem (or problems) are pretty much visible on this screenshots.
First 2 SS are made by me and are made in 1.07
This one is from video from 0.63
and here are all the wrong things in current version that were amazing in 0.63 (that screenshot is from 0.63).

All those problems are pretty much game changers just because of how much DayZ depends on immersion and looks. I hope you will try to fix this issues asap, they really dont look okay and i think they were caused by 0.63 beta stable patch changes (you gave us ability to change quality of AO propably because you changed AO technique into some worse looking one and gamma fix was implemented that i dont even want to comment, it shouldnt work at DayZ and gamma sliders should be still here just to let us lower the gamma instead of increasing). I really hope you havent done this changes to make console versions and PC version look famillar, that would be bad move to all PC players. Also making colors warmer on Chernarus (also lighting in noon should look much more yellow/orange ish) would make game far better looking and make it look diffrent from Livonia that has pretty much only cold colors.

Changing all this things isnt needed, just let us set AO into old one and let us turn off HDR, turn of blurr and bloom effects and it will be fine.

@Geez Any comment on this?

Hello NakedByo.

  1. Adaptive exposure cant be simply switched off as it is integral part of the overall lighting, but you can expect more tweaks to be done in order to make the effect less dominant.
  1. We have switched from SSAO to HBAO during later 0.63 versions (your observation is correct, but it has no connection to night noise addition or gamma slider removal). We prefer the way HBAO looks like now (over SSAO). For the comparison, take a look on following pictures (hbao off vs hbao on).

  1. Depth of field makes sense only for use in ironsights and optics, having it forced by default in the landscape makes it look worse in our view. Grass rendering distance is set and wont be decreased or increased anymore because of performance constraints. The colors on picture will look different, because they are taken in different time of day and weather conditions.

@Geez Thanks for reply and explaining this effects a little.
I still have two more questions.
1 - Since later 0.63 versions there seems to be no option to turn off postprocess effects (and bloom but its not that important). Why?
2 - Would it be possible to let us choose between SSAO and HBAO in game options. I've seen something like that in other games but obviously they were running on diffrent engines.

1 We did this change to make playing field more even for everyone (lot of people are switching off effects to gain advantage) and we generally offer on/off only when the effect has more serious performance impact.
2 We do not plan to offer SSAO as HBAO proved to be better optimized AO method overall.

@Geez I just wanted to add one more screenshot i saw on twitter showing how bad HDR can be sometimes. Hoping for a quick fix.
