It seems to just happen randomly as I walk around. nothing to do with respawning or joining a server.

The easiest fix for this would probably be to only allow a container to be added to another if it is empty.

If implemented this way you could then make backpacks take up less space as well which would allow you to pick up a spare for a friend.
