Possible fix for laggy and choppy VON/VoIP channels
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Having been playing multiplayer recently, I've noticed a consistent behaviour of VON channels (especially global and side channel). Other players have noticed it too as the effect is quite clear.

The fix goes as follows: If you want to talk understandably (without lags) in those channels, you have to first keep the transmission open for about 20 seconds on those channels, which apparently clears some kind of cache. After completing this, the VON lag gets noticeably smaller and makes your transmission understandable.

Steps To Reproduce
  1. Join a populated server
  2. Join the same server in different ID/game
  3. Try to talk on global or side channel in VON - notice the extreme choppiness
  4. Start transmission on global or side channel and keep it open for 20-30 seconds
  5. Try to talk on the same channel again – the quality of transmission is very often noticeably better
Additional Information

The clearer VON is not absolutely guaranteed, but it works almost every time. It has become a common bandaid fix for laggy VON on several servers I'm playing on.

When is the bug going to be fixed?

Is there not a main bug designated for this bug?

This bug has been on going for almost a year, I think just after Beta this bug was introduced.

Possible duplicate of Bug #18733 "Global chat is laggy in almost every server"

But at least this bug report provides a possible solution or workaround versus no solution!
