When loading in Altis game drops to 1 FPS.

Description

Loading in on Altis seems to break the game. It drops to 1FPS including sound. After that the whole game seems to stutter and freeze for half a second every second including the ingame pause menu. The editor seems to work fine and is not affected by the bug. But the main menu is and the game continues to stutter until restart.

Loading in on Stratis does not seem to cause the bug. At any graphics settings.
And lowering graphics settings does not improve the framerate in any way. {F21635} {F21636} {F21637} {F21638} {F21639}

I have the exact same problem. At least it isn't just me with this issue.

Hoping the Developers see this.

AD2001- He is running CPU - i5 750 2.4GHz quad core
GPU - AMD 5770 1GB DDR5
RAM - 4GB

He just needs to provide settings being used

I have this issue too. Stratis runs fine, Altis 0 to 1 FPS.

CPU: Intel Core2Quad Q9550
GPU: Radeon HD 6870 1GB
RAM: 4GB
OS: Vista 32bit

Between each stutter, more and more textures load into the world. However, when all textures appear to have loaded in, the poor performance continues. Arma3.exe registers 25% CPU usage, the GPU is idling.

I have tried:

  • Verifying the downloaded files
  • Defragging the files (didn't have too, zero fragmentation)
  • Making sure there are no Addons being loaded
  • -nologs
  • -cpucount=4
  • -exthreads=7
  • Starting the mission at night
  • Lowering settings
  • Checking display drivers are up to date

Any settings I try. Other people I`m talking on TS with don`t seem to have the problem. I`m downloading the map on my laptop right now. I`m thinking it is because I`m running Win 7 32bit.

After I check if it still persists I will chuck up the specs.

After looking at Devuls` report and Tiger Walts one I think it is something to do with 32bit OS versions but like I said. Waiting for the DL on my laptop(it is running a Win 7 Ult 64bit)

Devul added a comment.Aug 26 2013, 5:47 PM

I do not see the problem of running this game on 32 bit OS. I run Stratis extremely well.. But this is the only problem in use on 32 bit OS.

The only issue i've got with 32 bits is not being able to use my 8 gig of memory. I can only use 4 of it even though 8 is plugged in

Same. But it looks like the only connection.

You might be right anyone using 64 bit have the same issue?

Changing the view distances fixed this for me.

I set mine to something low and unplayable (no change)

Devul added a comment.Aug 26 2013, 5:55 PM

^ I put the view distances to lowsest, and all settings are low. Unplayable with no change.

I also tried the view distance but like them, no change.

I lowered overall view distance to 3000m and object to 1500m, all other settings maxed out with a GTX 680, and I get 30-45FPS. Considerably lower than Stratis but not unplayable, though they really do need to optimize the game substantially.

Finished DL of Altis on laptop. Runs no problem(20FPS expected)

God damnit. ...

Same issue

  • changing in-game video settings makes no (or very little) difference
  • testing done with 500m view distance
  • tried with -noLogs
  • tried validating steam files
  • tried shift numpad - (flush) after each change
  • same test in editor (place one unit hit preview) on Stratis gets 60FPS

On Altis:

  • if I start in the water far from land - 30FPS
  • starting on a small island - 15FPS
  • starting at main airfield - 2FPS

Character in 3rd person view gets graphical glitches (flashes) and other strangeness like stretched-neck syndrome

Also after this happens (drop to 2FPS) exiting back to the main menu does not help (still runs slooooow) I need to quit the game and re-launch.

Also have active Intel HD Graphic 4000 for second Monitor

Oo I forgot that i have Overall visibilty set to 12000m , decresed to 5000 and 75 fps :)

Not sure if this is related, but the Splendid Config Viewer also runs slowly, the main editing screen is fine though.

Editing Stratis mission, the Splendid Config Viewer is fine.

I think I've figured out what is causing the low framerates, but not the root cause of the problem.

I flew an MH-9 at 10,000 ft on a heading of 270 on an intercept with the south-eastern tip of Altis. The view distance was around 4000m, so only small area of the sea below me was within the fogging distance.

The framerate out at sea was poor, I didn't record it but 15-20 is a good guess (I'd get 60+ on Stratis). As the land approached the view distance, the framerate began to deteriorate. When the land came into view, I noticed something curious. Each frame that rendered, the land took a different shape. The LOD was constantly changing! And with each LOD change, the game is loading in the textures and geometry for that LOD level.

In support of my LOD theory, there is also this:

1 frame after turning head - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=173192965
Each frame thereafter - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=173192988

When I'm facing forward, the correct LOD model is being used for the co-pilot, but when I turn to look at him it drops to a very low resolution mesh. Also, the external view of the helo has the pilots missing.

I think that the values that are used for determining the LOD level used for rendering objects are being corrupted. This is resulting in a high frequency of LOD changes across a high number of objects and in turn an incredibly high demand for loading assets. Frame rendering is delayed until the assets are loaded or a timeout on asset retrieval occurs.

The trend of this occurring on 32bit OS only seems to be building. It's possible that on 32 bit operating systems, some very large numbers are being subjected to bit-wise truncation or some 32-bit values are being overflowed.

My Stratis runs fine. Altis is still unplayable.

Keep in mind that some servers are significantly less optimized than others. Your framerate can literally be halved when switching from one server to another.

ARJay added a comment.Aug 27 2013, 2:12 PM

This is nothing to do with multiplayer, it's a legit bug, 1 player placed in editor hit preview, 1 FPS

+ARJay, I wasn't saying that this was the only issue, just that you should keep it in mind.

Stratis and ALL other games run fine.

From today's DEV update changelog:

Known issue: Reports of Altis not working at all on some PCs (being investigated with priority)

So your running 64 bit ad have the same problem. intersting as i thought it was only 32 bit operating systems

MadDogX added a subscriber: MadDogX.May 7 2016, 4:15 PM

@usnoozulooz, it supposedly is.

@nomisco, what settings are you running, specifically view distance, object draw distance, object details and terrain details?

Have you tried running with the -nologs parameter?

Devul added a comment.Aug 27 2013, 3:19 PM

Yes we have tried nologs. I have run all of my settings on lowest and I get the same result.

I was talking to nomisco. So far, I've seen only one other person with a 64bit OS report this problem, and he claimed that -nologs fixed it.

It appears that there are two different performance issues, one of which is exclusive to 32bit OS users and cannot currently be fixed by any known means. The other affects 64bit users but can be fixed by reducing settings or using certain parameters.

Some people who could run Stratis with 12k draw distance are apparently baffled that the same doesn't work on Altis.

@MadDogX - I will check as soon as I get home (couple of hours). I shall try the -nologs parameter and reducing (whatever) the draw distance.

Devul added a comment.Aug 27 2013, 3:45 PM

MadDogX. I can run a map like Chernarus on Arma 3 (All in Arma mod) at about 50 FPS with all my settings on Medium, so why can I not even run Altis whilst settings are on lowest.

Because bug. I'm seeing it on my second (32bit) PC aswell, while all is well on the 64bit one.

The devs are on it with max priority.

Devul added a comment.Aug 27 2013, 3:51 PM

Thank you!

IMPORTANT!

I have managed to get Altis running at framerates that I expect my computer should achieve.

Suspecting that the fault lies within the actual Altis data itself, I started renaming the Altis map data files. Only one of these files is causing the problem:

map_altis_data.pbo

Renaming this file to map_altis_data.pbox will let you run Altis without the super low FPS and the Splendid Config Viewer becomes responsive too. I believe that this file contains just the map images used in the editor, map screen and the map preview thumbnail. You will get an error when Arma 3 can't find them, but you can dismiss them with no problems.

All the LOD issues have gone too, they must have been caused by the game engine just not getting around to running certain functions.

+Tiger Walts

That makes the roads disappear as well as other things such as images, etc.

"Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads"

I only tried it out from aircraft, so I didn't notice the missing roads. I hope they'll be able to issue a replacement file soon.

I got the settings as requested, they were:

Overall 2368
Object 999
Shadow 70

Most of the other stuff was either on high or very high.

However, before running the game today, I first had to download the development build as I had reverted to the 'stable' build. I also let the game autodetect, and these are what it set:

http://imageshack.us/a/img96/2361/afbs.jpg
http://imageshack.us/a/img600/4240/j6n7.jpg
http://imageshack.us/a/img571/9921/mkic.jpg

And in addition to this, it now runs perfectly (I didn't try to run it today before I let it autodetect).

One additional note is that yesterday I joined a multiplayer game and it worked fine for about a minute, but then seemed to freeze, and since I quit (then started again in either MP or the editor) it was playing up. But it's alright now...

Peter added a comment.Aug 27 2013, 7:21 PM

Devul before also was ok for me. Looks that after the patch today I have microstops when turn my head using trackir but not sure if is problem of trackier software, v synk or other.
I will try to check and post ASAP

i've tried the solution of Tiger-walts...and it works!!!!i've just flyed over altis during 25 minutes and visit two towns with a minimum of 40fps....it was great...So it means the matter come clearly from this file:"map_altis_data.pbo"

Tiger_Walts solution for me worked fine. Now stable 60 fps. Thanks.
So problem is with file "map_altis_data.pbo".

Raandom added a subscriber: Raandom.May 7 2016, 4:15 PM

I can confirm that tigers solution works. No idea why, but BI you have to search in that file for a solution.

I am still getting framerate dropping to below 5 FPS in some locations on the map while I'm on the ground.

The worst areas seem to be on the eastern side of the map. Roads are everywhere on the map, so it could be the road objects in the map_altis_data.pbo that cause this issue. There may also be objects stored in other files that can cause this issue too.

Those geodesic domes near Altis International are a prime spot for it happening. I approached on foot and the framerate bombed out. So I lowered the draw distances until the framerate was 30. I then continued approaching until it happened again. This time I had to drop the draw distance to minimum. I was able to get into the base but as I approached the southeastern side it happened again. If I turned away, the framerate would recover.

Something within 500m (or a little further) of that area in the East to South arc is causing this too.

Tiger's solution works for me as well. It means no roads are marked on the map which makes things a bit old school and I'm not sure what effect it will have on autonomous vehicles, but it mostly gets around the framerate issue.

I don't think the map is free of problems though, I am still getting a certain amount of non-responsiveness from the GUI while moving around the program after Altis has been loaded. That may be a different but related issue though.

*Edit - turns out renaming this file makes ground based autonomous vehicles mostly forget about roads. It's odd, they seem to veer towards where the road texture is, but then after a while they seem to give up and just go off road. In addition, renaming this file sometimes makes grass grow on the roads in front of you, as well as occasionally seeing things like reflector stakes which should be on the side of the roads, appear in the middle.

Did not had any problems after disabling that pbo file.

This issue has supposedly been resolved in the latest dev branch update.

Please test and report back. :)

Not completely fixed yet. I already commented on the forum about it. It runs good till I got to a town (Athira). First time it was instantly 0-1 fps, second attempt the issue came back after walking around in the town for a few minutes. Including the lod issues and the glitchy looking player character.

Edit; the location does not seem to matter much. Was flying along the east coastline just now and it happened again that it went down to 0 fps, it was not even an urban area.

Spud added a comment.Aug 28 2013, 1:21 PM

Agree with B00tsy about the LOD things and so on. It may be a slightly different, but related issue there though. I'm getting some really frustrating issues with graphics, but I can't find any logs to hunt through.

Markedly improved performance for me. I have roads again!

Increasing Virtual Memory limits is just papering over the cracks though. Hopefully we'll see some optimization that prevents this happening at all.

If you are still having the issue, check that you actually have sizable pagefiles configured on your computer. If possible, make one on each HDD you have. This solved similar issues I had with Arma 2.

Same Just flew over the salt plane towards the sea and dropped to 1 FPS was not able to recover and i had to quit the program and restart

Update> I have just spend 3 hours on Altis creating a mission and I did not had any problems now. I spend the time on a small part of Altis, about 1.5km radius.

Whatever the problem is, it was not there where I was, performance was good!
Besides the roads is there an other thing on Altis at some locations that causes this?

I don't think it's the roads per se, but rather the number of objects in the player's field of view. This includes objects hidden behind other objects, but not objects hidden well behind terrain. This is why the hilly areas seem to run better. The flat plains to the East seem more troublesome. I'm not sure if it's the number of total objects or the number of unique objects.

When there are too many objects, the program can no longer store them all in the memory it has access to. The program now has to start juggling objects in and out of memory. This is when the heavy stuttering occurs. The last update increased the default amount of Virtual RAM that the program has access to. This just makes the problem less likely to occur.

This also wont necessarily solve the stuttering when you travel between new areas, or teleport, or drop into a town, or even turn your view in some places.

Still have the issue after todays update. All is fine at one moment (doing a mission) second later it is instantly 1-2 fps and the lod issues appear again. Aborting to main menu does not recover the fps, have to alt F4 out of the game and restart.

I have only 3Gb ram, but i have increased the virtual memory a lot (12Gb max), it uses max 5.5Gb virtual memory.

Same. Plays fine for a bit the drops to 1fps and does not recover.

Still have the issue. The last patches did not change anything. If deleting an file doesn't cause any real problems and removes the drops you're doing something wrong bohemia.

Spud added a comment.Sep 3 2013, 10:09 AM

Latest patch for me made some huge differences, I was able to go into the main town of Altis for the first time and I was able to race a quad bike around the cart track near the airport, however opening the map turned out to be the trigger in this case which caused the LOD issues to appear. There is always a trigger of some sort, whether it's traversing the viewport towards a busy part of the island, opening the map or using the right mouse button to peer at something.

Before doing that though, with the last patch I was getting 30 - 40FPS in near the main airport, so there is some real progress being made.

Same here, Stratis works fine, Altis not so much - My specs:

Core 2 Duo E8300 @ 2.83Ghz
Sapphire AMD HD 7750 1g low profile
2G DDr2 RAM

Used to run stratis on 20-40 fps

I agree its getting there. I can now do some single player Altis missions without a problem. (have not even attempted Altis MP yet)

I do still get the 0 fps issue though. it comes from nowhere.

I could wonder round the main airport for half hour. Go to a spot where i've already been and looked in the same direction and bam. unrecoverable even after going back to main menu. Seems totally random to me on where and when it happens.

For all who has still performance issues on Altis.
I created new category Altis Performance. Everybody please create own report with these informations:
*Issue description
*Your Dxdiag and .rpt file after reproduce this issue.
*Your graphics configuration (screenshots or Arma 3.cfg file from this folder: c:\Users\*\Documents\Arma 3\
*Coordinates when is issue on concrete place, or information, that issue is same on whole island. For coordinates type "position player" in watch in debug console.
