Would be good to select your whole favourite gear in the profile menu with 3d preview of the soldier.
A option for servers/missions to allow or not allow your custom gear or just the clothing should also be avaliable then.

Free painting is not what i think about, because players shouln´t be able to put swastikas etc. on their equipment, but some different green and sand tones and/or camo patterns would be nice.
no on COD people painted their weapons like red and blue and shi* so obviously it reminded me of them...
if you meant camouflage i suppose that's a different story...
I think it's cool to chose the camo for your clothing.
i think it is not difficult to make this possible.
