Event Timeline
@deadpoetic6 now that you mentioned it I remembered, all the vehicles are like that, the guns are not as much as the vehicles but they're loud yeah
Along with other bug reports concerning Positional Audio, also think the choppers are too loud, preventing people from using voice chat or VON.
I think this also deals with balancing of sound, versus just bad positional audio issues. But I'm by far an audio expert.
I can tell you though, when a chopper is flying above me at 200-500 feet, I can still hear and speak just fine with others nearby. Chopper loudness is also dependent on the design of the aircraft engine, as older models without modifications will be much louder.
This bug will likely be closed as a duplicate of other Positional Audio bugs.
This must be limited to a specific sound setting or sound card. Sounds levels are ok for me, except reloading sounds (#8938). If anything most vehicles and gunshots are too quiet. A buddy of mine has a Sound Blaster Z and he hears everything from further away than I do. We compared the sound settings and they are similar, except for the sound card.
I am using an on-board sound chip from Realtek.
@rogerx
I don't know when was the last time a chopper flew 200 feet (60 meters) over your head,
But I can tell you from experience that in that height you wouldn't hear much, it's loud man.
The choppers that flew over my head about that height are Apache, Blackhawk and Bell 212
and I couldn't really speak with the people around me in any of those times.
When they are getting higher (400-500 feet which is 120 - 150 meters) you can hear OK, but at about 200 feet it's still extremely loud.
Of course it's all estimates I didn't have a measuring tape
but it was about 40-50 meters.
I'm using an ASUS Xonar STX and outputting through optical S/PDIF Toslink to a Yamaha RX-V375 receiver for decoding the Dolby Signal from the game. Pretty much getting audio as is meant to be heard by the developers.
Likely down-mixing or up-mixing might be an issue, but I doubt it. It's more plausible the settings within the Audio configuration panel are not identical?
I think I just figured it out with my Bug #9083, once the chopper spins-up, the sound loudness level remains static whether or not just hovering or at full throttle and moving at greater than 200 MPH. In other words, when a chopper is hovering or slowly hovering over head, it should be a lot less louder as it is not full throttle. (My bug is not a duplicate of positional audio.)
I just turned down the effects to 10% and never worried about it again. And I think most do similar, until somebody (and only this person) vigorously complained last night. So figured I'd help-out and figure out what's going on here versus just ignoring it.
bez: I deal with UH-60's every day. Different engine designs and different rotor designs, all have differing levels of loudness. I can speak and hear just fine with one hovering over head at about 500 ft, guessing about 30-40 MPH. If you're working nearby such as 25 feet, yes it is loud. I think once you read my bug, you'll understand better. Yes, things sound pretty good, but likely just need to be enhanced.
I am not sure I understood what you meant but actually
When a chopper fly over your head once it's getting directly above you,
you would feel a sudden dramatic increase in volume since the rotors are
pushing the sound waves directly to your head.
While my explanation might not be physically accurate
it is infact a really sudden increase in volume.
-EDIT-
BTW, I didn't really pay any specific attention to choppers sounds
since out of all of the vehicles in the game, choppers sounded pretty accurate to me.
I will definitely check it now with more attention though.
