Dropped jacket cannot be picked back up or accessed in inventory
Reviewed, NormalPublic

Description

While in a hunting cabin, I found a jacket (new jacket) which I put on, replacing my existing jacket (old jacket). The new jacket was on a table and I was standing next to the table when I put it on.

As a result, the old jacket was placed in a spot under the table where it could not be picked up nor could the inventory items be accessed. I lost everything that was in that jacket.

The new position put the jacket under a table, in a position where part of it was sticking through a wall outside. I checked both inside and outside and confirmed that I could not pick up the jacket or access its contents, though I could see the 'jacket' prompt when it was in the center of my screen. I also tried crouching and laying prone; neither worked.{F4365944}

Steps To Reproduce
  1. Visit a hunting cabin wearing a jacket that includes inventory items. The hunting cabin needs to have a new jacket on the table.
  2. Stand directly next to the table.
  3. Swap your existing jacket with the new one; the old jacket will appear under the table (clipping into the wall and visible from outside). The old jacket will not be accessible for picking up or to gather the contents.
Additional Information

PS: I have no context for what "Major" or "Trivial" means but I lost a gun cleaning kit and a weapon so I guess Major? But it's not like my privacy was invaded or the game crashed or anything.

Event Timeline

Item collision checks have been an issue for forever.

Never hot swap next to any type of wall.

Usually in that case you can aim at it and grab it. (Nothing in hands since it can't go in your inventory)

Worst case is when it ends up on the roof.

In this specific case I could aim at it (see screenshot) but not grab it, which was new to me. I've definitely see the behavior you describe where things end up on the roof, but usually I can aim at it and grab like you describe.

I'm hopeful that the resolution of this issue isn't "Game is working as intended, users should not hot swap next to any type of wall" :) Having said that, I'm not sure if there's another report of item collision checks that is already being worked on. If so I'm happy to link this to that as a dupe.

in your screenshot you had a gun in hand, but either way.
it's an annoying issue that would be nice to stop existing.

Fair point. :) I also checked inventory and the jacket wasn't accessible there either.

usually never is.
only luck I've ever had, is empty hands, eye zoom, and slow your mouse DPI and start line scanning.
If you can see it and there isn't an invisible collision barrier between you and the pickup point, you should be able to grab it.

Well put. I tried a wide range of angles and it felt like from the outside, the wall was blocking the pickup point, and inside the table/chairs had collision barriers that were blocking the pickup point. Basically it felt like the item ended up in a box of collision barriers.

Having said all that: This is my first issue filed and I'm not sure what the next step is for driving towards resolution, what is typical? I'm happy to provide more info if needed, but not sure whether this is even on the radar.
