Proximity chat issue
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Game Version number: 1.2.0.70
Modded: No

Sound beam is very narrow when talking on proximity chat. Players need to stand face to face. It is also very directional. Slight movement causes the speech to be very quiet. It is also almost pointless to use proxy chat in vehicles.

Hello kawalec.
We cannot seem to reproduce this on our end. Can you please provide your audio settings?

@Geez
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgvCU6UYBcs
In game sound settings:

My sound card: Creative SoundBlaster AE5
Speakers: Logitech Z906 5.1 speakers
Sound card software: Sound Blaster Command
Microphone: Jabra Talk25 Bluetooth microphone; it works and is managed by Windows without any issues.
Additional features of the software: Scout Mode, It monitors and manages dynamic range so the sounds in the soundscape are more distinguishable.
Every player I encounter has problem with hearing proxy chat in the situation similar to the one in the video.
Before 1.2 I had exactly the same settings and hardware, everything worked perfectly then.

Maybe that's the source of all sound issues:
"Audio
Added: Dynamic reverb based on roomsize".
The outside world as a "room" has very big/infinite size, so there's no reverb?

I also verified my game files integrity. The issue still occurs.
I've confirmed that other players have the same problem.

XBOX players don't have that problem.

I’ve created a useless Bohemia account just to say that this glitch DOES affect XBOX and makes proximity chat almost useless after this most recent update.

@Shadow_Soul51
Ok. That's interesting I've talked to 6 or 7 players from XBOX and they had no issues with proxy chat.
But your input is really valuable, because it means that the problem is wider than I thought.
Thanks for the comment.

It’s nearly been two weeks since this glitch was first reported still with no response about fixing it or even acknowledging that it exists. As I play alone (as I can’t hear anyone I’m not looking at within a 1ft radius in proximity chat) I begin to notice more and more glitches that were introduced in this latest update and I start to question if I really want to keep playing a game with so many glitches that also doesn’t allow me to hear the people I enjoy playing with even if the game may be enjoyable at times.

Hello again.
We have managed to reproduce the issue and it seems it is being caused by combination of having Windows Sonic Spatial Sound enabled and using Speaker mode for Stereo processing type in game.
Turning off Windows Sonic Spatial Sound should resolve the issue for now.

@Geez
I have "Windows Sonic Spatial Sound" turned off. I've never used it. I play using 5.1 speakers, not headphones.

When I play using speakers, changing in-game audio setting "Audio processing mode" from speakers to headphones makes the issue less annoying. But at the same time this change affects the soundscape even more, making it flat.
"Creative Render Audio Effects" that are on, I've been using since the beginning and it never cause any problems.
Issues started occurring with 1.2 update.

Please roll-back to 1.1 update with sound settings.

Thank you, seems to be an issue in general with surround speakers.

I play on Xbox with a headset directly outputting game audio into my ear without surround sound speakers and without Windows Sonic Spacial Sound (which does not exist on Xbox to my knowledge). This is not an issue with surround sound speakers nor is it an issue with Windows Sonic Spacial Sound conflicting with Stereo Processing Type in game. This is not a hardware issue as it is a cross platform problem affecting both platforms and all audio output types. This is a game issue affecting all audio sources (not just proximity chat) in which sound beams created by any audio source ie. proximity chat, vehicle sounds, gunfire, picking up ammo from the arsenal box, etc are not being properly received by certain players not directly having their camera (likely audio receiver) faced towards audio source within a 1 meter distance. This can easily be proved by the fact that while in any vehicle, audio from the vehicle as well as proximity chat audio is barely able to be heard while in third person camera (likely audio receiver is camera placement again big surprise). This audio issue being related to very narrow sound beam columns being created and received by player camera is also proved by the fact that while facing any audio source ie. player speaking, vehicle, ammo pickup, etc simply turning 5 degrees either direction from the centre of audio source will only play audio from one side of headset despite still looking almost directly at audio source.
This audio issue only appeared after update 1.2 was released and was not present before 1.2 at all despite no hardware changes at all recently. Update 1.2 caused the audio problem many of us are experiencing. Simply roll back to update 1.1 audio files or figure out and fix the problem but please just do something instead of ignoring this issue for another month.

Sincerely,
An Arma Reforger player tired of game breaking issues.

Kawalec, try turning your stereo processing mode to headphones. Should be located in the in-game settings menu under audio.

@CW5-Player
Thank you for the tip, but ff you've read all the posts in this ticket, you could see that I've already tried that. It makes the soundscape unbearably flat.
I am not looking for some by-passes and tricks. I want Bohemia to fix the issue that was non-existent before that botched update.
Not to mention that not only proximity chat is broken. Also the aforementioned soundscape was changed and it sounds much worse than before 1.2

@Geez
It's been 5 months. Proxy chat is still broken as it was. Is Bohemia even planning to fix it?
