Microphone input is often unreliable and is very detrimental to the experience if it does not work. There is no way to debug this yourself if you are playing solo, you will just have to hope that it works and if it doesn't you lose out on interesting interactions with other players. There should be a field in the settings that will output your microphone back to you so you can see if the game picks it up.

There is, voice threshold in settings. When you talk, you’ll see the bar move up and down when it detects your voice. If you see nothing, mics not working or game is messing up (likely game because voice chat is pretty unreliable to work at times). I’ll grab a video later.

This noise indicator should just flash, move like a graphic equaliser or turn a different colour when talking... talking is louder than a footstep after all and a noise indicator should be just that - not a movement indicator
