Current state of the Ghillie in DayZ - Feedback/Suggestion Post
Feedback, NormalPublic

Description

Hello everyone, I wanted to talk a bit about the current state of the ghillie suit in DayZ.

As some of you might remember, in the previous 0.62 version of DayZ the player could find cans of spray paint and use it to change the appearance of various items, such as firearms, melee weapons and the ghillie suit.
For the ghillie suit specifically, you could craft the normal Tan version using burlap strips and netting, then combine with green spray paint to obtain the Woodland variant, then combine a Woodland piece with black spray paint to obtain the Mossy variant.

In the current version of DayZ the Tan ghillie can be crafted (same way as before) the Mossy ghillie can be found at dynamic events, and the Woodland ghillie hasn't been obtainable since the 0.63 update in 2018.

I know you (the devs) said on a livestream roughly ~1 year ago that you didn't have any current plans to re-add spray paint (much to my dismay) I'm not sure if this has changed already or will change in the future, but if not then I'd like to advocate for some kind of system to be returned that allows the player to craft both the Woodland and Mossy ghillies.

While it would be great to see spray paint return in its full form, spraying firearms and melee weapons was less important and I can go without it, but in the case of the ghillie suit it's much more of a necessity, and the lack of it really kills any incentive to want to use that content to begin with.
Right now there's really no reason to craft a ghillie suit whatsoever, the craftable Tan ghillie just stands out way too much in comparison to the Woodland/Mossy ones that nobody is actually going to want to go out of their way to spend hours crafting it, this is a huge shame in my opinion as crafting the full Woodland/Mossy ghillie in 0.62 was a lengthy process but the reward in the end felt amazing.

Regardless of how it would be added, I hope to see this feature return in some form.

Suggestion #1 - (The most obvious one) Bring back spray paint, at least for the ghillie suit.
In the case that firearm/melee weapon spraying was returned in the future, then at least the spray cans would be in-game already for that, so that's a bonus to this option.
If not, then I wouldn't mind seeing spray cans return anyway with the exclusive use of spraying the ghillie suit. It means they would have more of a niche purpose than before but I don't see any issue with that.

Alternatively, introduce a brand new way of obtaining the ghillie variants - Some suggestions I've seen are as follows.

Suggestion #2 - Allow the player to put ghillie pieces in their hand and then look at certain textures in the world (such as grass/leaves/mud/hay etc) to craft. Allowing you to swap between all 3 camos on the fly to match your nearby environment!

Suggestion #3 - Use plant material obtained from farming and allow us to cut up camo nets for camo net strips - Each ghillie would have its own crafting recipe.
Tan - Burlap Strip + Netting
Woodland - Plant Material + Netting
Mossy - Camo Net Strips + Netting

Credit for these suggestions goes to Sacriel/Asmondian, they are not my own. I'd be perfectly happy with the return of spray paint, but these ideas are awesome too!

While it's nice that the Mossy pieces are at least obtainable in the current version (via dynamic events), this just feels like a band-aid fix after the removal of spray paint. I'm really not a fan of it to be honest, having to constantly run between dynamic events just hoping that you get lucky enough to find the full suit feels terrible, at least with the old craftable method you had a consistent way to work towards the suit while looting towns. Every time you walked into a shed and found another burlap it felt great being one step closer to crafting it.

With how the system currently works it also means that breaking down any ghillie pieces you find is completely pointless as it gives you netting/strips, items that can only be used to make more Tan ghillie, an item that nobody wants. (I guess the one exception is to get netting for a fishing trap, but it doesn't seem like many people use those either)

As a final note, I felt that crafting the Woodland/Mossy ghillie was an enjoyable end-game goal, not only for myself but I'm sure many other players too, unfortunately it seems like nowadays you don't see anyone crafting them, they just feel like dead content. The Tan version is useless on 99% of Chernarus/Livonia and the full Mossy version is extremely annoying/boring to obtain.

I would also assume (and hope) that if the ability to craft these items was brought back, that all ghillie pieces would be removed from the dynamic event loot table.

That's about it, I hope we can see the Ghillie Suit return to its former glory soon :)

Thanks for reading.

I second the idea of spray paint making a return as well as suggestions #1 and #2. Suggestion #3 make sense but I don't think it would be good balance-wise as those items (especially plant material) are much easier to obtain than (12?) burlap sacks. The full ghillie suit should always be an endgame item in my opinion.

Yeah I agree, options 1 or 2 are preferred by myself as well.

While the plant material makes a lot of sense for the Woodland ghillie, the idea of feeling like I have to do some farming for the sole purpose of finishing my ghillie sounds pretty unenjoyable.

What I do like about option 3 is the idea of cutting up camo nets, but instead of receiving "camo net strips" just give us either normal netting or camo netting, which could be used as a replacement for normal netting in the ghillie crafting recipe. This way the resource bottleneck is still placed upon burlap sacks, but it's just more convenient to craft a ghillie while remaining inland as you have a reliable source of netting (but at the risk of entering military areas).

Yes and it would probably be too easy to get early on if you walk the coast and check the fishing boats and Cherno's containers for netting.

I like this. Either this or make it require a lot of camo net strips. But then again this wouldn't make too much sense given the size of a single camo net.

Hey @Geez could you delete this comment from horaortiz please? Seems like a bot account basically copy/pasting another message and putting a sketchy link in the quote, thanks.

You guys not fixing stuff for years, not releasing the things that you showed/promised for years, the game is 10 y.o. now, and in general compared to original arma II mod it has only a tiny part of things that ppl liked dayz for, and you still think than when you release dayz 2 all ppl will be like "shut up and take my money"? Well, some part will, but there's another part that has everything OK with the memory. "Hello, here's to you dayz 2, welcome to another 10 years of promises, cancelations and doing nothing", - no, thanks. You're so lucky to have this 80lvl tolerate community, if it wasn't about modding you'd be long dead and forgotten by now, and still you have balls to treat them like shit. Toxic zones/dynamic events - copy/pasted Radioation mod, even vanilla train event goes in the same place in Solnechniy, Explosives/C4 - same, humvees - RaG Tysons mod, Dambog - from numerous amazing custom undergrounds locations on custom servers + keycard mod. Don't you have your own imagination? Did you even thank that ppl for the ideas? But yea, don't bother, just another stupid kid, what does he know, right?
