Description

The current group limits per side in ArmA 3 restricts the scope and size of team-based engagements. Larger team operations are an integral part of the ArmA 3 experience for many users, and the current group limit can hinder the gameplay experience.

At present, the cap on the number of groups per side does not fully cater to larger servers where many players may wish to participate in coordinated groups. Increasing this limit would greatly enhance the gameplay for server operators who desire larger scale operations.

For instance, in scenarios with high player count + higher AI units count, the group limit becomes a constraint, disallowing the formation of new groups. As ArmA 3 aims to provide a realistic military simulation experience, this limit can undermine the strategic and tactical gameplay elements.

An increase in the group limits per side would not only offer greater flexibility for server operators and mission makers, but also enhance the overall gaming experience for all players.

I would like to have a group limit of 1000 groups per side at minimum, we have currently reached the limit after 3 months of mission gameplay time (yes we have such long missions).

The group limit is 288 per side, and the player count limit on a server is 255. I don't think that is a problem. Unlikely to happen

I do consider the group limit an issue in which Arma 3 should improve upon.

Allow me to explain myself with some adding up, particularly with the scale of the Altis Armed Forces as a reference, which roughly from what I can tell reaches a Brigade in strength. This AAF is split administratively into 2 main regiments and a grouping of squadrons. The regiments themselves consist of about 5 companies. Each of these companies will probably have 4 or so platoons, and these platoons will have about 4 or so squads. I will assume each squadron is basically company strength with about 4 platoons in a similar format for their various functions.

In regards to how many persons I am comfortable to see an Arma 3 AI control, I am hesitant to group things over a platoon, since I have noticed it only has a capacity to really manoeuvre and fight as a large squad, which largely does not reflect the conditions of modern warfare. As for the relevance of the majority of AAF to be present within an Arma 3 mission, I would consider the size of the Altis map and the capacity of long range, accurate surveillance and ordnance deployment to justify its involvement to such a large scale within that theatre.

To add those up, assuming I were to try and deploy the AAF as squads, I must use 4x4x14 to set a requirement of 224 groups, and now I must consider the intermediate HQ formations that must be present to organise that minimal rabble. Each company will have an HQ, each platoon will have an HQ, each Squadron will have an HQ, each regiment will have an HQ, and finally the AAF itself will have a high command or a least a theatre command. So adding up the HQ squads, I must use 4x14 to set a requirement of 56 groups for the platoon HQ layer, I must use 14 groups for the Company and Squadron HQ layer, I must use 2 groups for the Regimental HQ layer, and then one more group for the AAF high command.

In the end, to truthfully and in accordance with what we know of a minimum organised structure used by the AAF, I would need a total of 224+56+14+2+1= 297 groups.

Considering that for now a group limit of 288 per side is insufficient to dutifully cover the smallest sovereign fighting force probably represented within the Arma 3 universe (assuming I don't want to see a platoon HQ leading a formation into battle, which is stupid AI btw), I think in all is a bit of a disappointment, personally. So please consider an upgrade to this limit to be something you may wish to work on, thank you.
