Infected seem to spot a player from way further than usual, hearing is way more sensitive as well. Sneaking behind them in sprint on grass, pecks their ears like never before.

could it be perhaps a desync in their spotting?
yet somewhat I doubt desync could cause such spike in their perception of hearing and spotting range. so no idea
