Opening UI causes unexpected Jet behavior
New, NormalPublic

Description

When ever a UI is opened the thrust of the aircraft you are piloting is randomly adjusted. If the engine is off then the airbrake is applied. This happens on both custom and vanilla UI's such as the Esc Menu. This issue does not happen if the map is open but if the create marker UI is opened then the thrust will be altered.

Steps To Reproduce

Jet thrust

  1. Place any aircraft that uses thrust (Jets, VTOL) in the editor
  2. Preview in multiplayer so Esc doesn't pause simulation
  3. Turn on the engine of the aircraft
  4. Press Esc to open the menu followed by closing it and observe your thrust
  5. Repeat step 4 several times to notice the random change in thrust

Airbrake

  1. Place any aircraft that uses thrust and you can visually tell the airbrake is applied in the editor
  2. Preview in multiplayer so Esc doesn't pause simulation
  3. With the aircraft engine off press Esc to open the menu and notice in the background the airbrake has been applied

This is still an issue in 2.00 RC but I took the time to test more in depth. While testing in multiplayer with the F/A-181 Black Wasp 2 (Stealth) pressing ESC to open the escape menu will do one of three things.

  1. If the engine of the jet is off the speedbrake is automatically applied, when the menu is closed the speedbrake will be released.
  2. If the engine of the jet is on and thrust is at 0 it will randomly apply thrust making the jet move forward on it's own.
  3. If the engine of the jet is on and thrust is greater then 0 the thrust will be set to 0, speedbrake will be applied, tail flaps will be up (As if you were taking off), and wing flaps will be 100% down. When closing the menu the speedbrake is released and the tail flaps will return to level but the wing flaps will stay down and always remain down until the player raises them.

Note it does not have to be the escape menu, any UI that takes control away from the player such as double click the map to place a marker or any custom UI will cause the above issue.

My Increase Thrust key is bound to "Q"
My Decrease Thrust key is bound to "Z"
My Speedbrake key is bound to "Left Shift"

It's not a bug. It's the "autopilot" system.

How is this not a bug? When a UI is opened I wouldn't expect to alter my flight systems (sometimes randomly).

sometimes randomly

It's not random. The AI controls your aircraft based on what it thinks is "best". It was designed to prevent your aircraft from crashing while you interact with the menu.

I'm not saying it's a good thing. Maybe it would've been wiser to make this feature optional.
