Start out in a day setting, when night falls you no longer have a face.

Not sure this is correct. Mine did not return even after the sun rose. Dying seemed to reset it.
Possible that beard configs were added without textures?

I think the flickering or sometimes just black terrain at night is also caused by the same bug as the black face. The lighting doesn't affect the terrain and the character's face.
