Game crashes: Memory and Graphics
Reviewed, NormalPublic

Description

Hiya!

For the past few months, I've had loads of crashes that have to do with my memory and directx.
Sometimes it'll be a failed write error for the memory, other times a read and other times a directx device memory issue.

5 examples of error messages I get:
"The instruction at 0xf1590ff3 referenced memory at 0xf1590ff3. The memory could not be written.",
"The instruction at 0x000002fc referenced memory at 0x000002fc. The memory could not be written.",
"DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED",
"0xC0000005 - STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION", (more recent)
"0xC0000409 - STATUS_STACK_BUFFER_OVERRUN" (more recent)

Also, my game will sometimes start to lag violently a few minutes before crashing, giving 1-3 FPS and all the models look blocky, as if I were playing Minecraft.

What I've tried:
Removed all mods
Verifying game cache
Reinstalling Arma 3 (twice)
Reinstalling Windows
Used a different profile
Reinstalling directx versions
Used different malloc settings through the launcher
Used different CPU count and ExThreads through the launcher
Changed Profiles path
Set documents folder so that it wasn't read-only
Run game in administrator mode
Run sfc /scannow, no errors
Verified nothing was overheating
Removed overclock from graphics card
Removed overclock from memory
Test different overclock on processor
Disable anti-virus and anti-malware
Re-seated physical video card
Re-seated physical memory modules
Rolled back video driver from latest version
Updated video driver to latest versions
Tested physical RAM w/ Windows Memory Diagnostic, no issue found
Ran all memory sticks in different DIMM slots with memtest86
Made sure graphics card drivers were updated
Removed pagefile, set pagefile to automatic, set pagefile to system managed size
Uninstalled Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable (x64 & x86), restarted computer, reinstalled

Hello,

you should be able to upload the files here directly (drag&drop them into comment or Additional Info box).
If you get an error message (might happen if storage limit have been reached), please try to use some free file sharing service.

Additionally, if you are able and willing to do so, please try to switch to the RC branch and see whether the situation get's better. If not, crash report files from that version will be most welcome.

Thank you

I have added a YouTube video of what the game looks like moments before it crashes:

https://youtu.be/OFvP3uu0c60

The majority of the time, it crashes this way.
Sometimes, more uncommonly however, the arma3 process completely shuts down and goes directly to the error report without any symptom/warning.

There is no way to solve a problem

@razazel
I found another user with the EXACT same issue that this is.

https://feedback.bistudio.com/T119376

I see you asked them for some files; do you want me to send you the same files as well so this fix can come along faster?
Also, the problem with RC branch is that we can't exactly test it on the multiplayer servers we play on and therefore it wouldn't be tested on the same environment.

Hello,

if you are able and willing to give the profiling branch a shot with the capture frame, those will be welcome.

Hello,

if you are able and willing to give the profiling branch a shot with the capture frame, those will be welcome.

What do you mean capture frame? Like recording software?

I meant this, I asked for this in the ticket you mentioned, I thought you were referring to this.

  • Switch to latest Arma 3 "profiling branch" - Steam Branches
  • Go into "Arma 3" directory in Steam and rename "arma3profiling.exe" to "arma3.exe" (Launcher and BattlEye are expecting that one).
  • Launch game, start playing and wait for the FPS drops or lags to occur
  • Then, press together {L SHIFT} + {NUM -} (NUM Minus) and release them - Help - Then just type "frame" (as with any other cheat mentioned in the Help)
  • Should a dialogue stating it was successful appear, select "COPY ALL" (third button at the bottom row).
  • Data should be copied to clip board so paste them (CTRL+V) anywhere you want (e.g. create a new txt file on desktop and paste the info there)
  • Once you have the txt file, upload it here
  • Also, please upload latest RPT file (on from the session where you performed these steps)

Should you need something explained more specifically, please let me know :)

There you go! Still crashing on latest update.

What else can I do to help and possibly speed this up?

Thanks for the files.

Do you, by any chance have also the crashdumps for when the game crashed?

SkillerPenguin added a comment.EditedOct 3 2016, 1:48 PM

Unfortunately, for that time, I do not have it as I had to alt-f4 the game since it wasn't crashing on its own.

I do, however, have dump files from the same day when it did indeed end up crashing on its own:

ArmaReport_Log_20161001T030842_Christopher

Also, I did have a crash earlier today where it had a very unique error message when it crashed on its own with the same symptoms, and here is the report for that:

@SkillerPenguin, I noticed that your first Arma report contains 3 arma3.rpt and arma3.bidmp files, but only 2 arma3.mdmp files. Can you see the missing file if you go to %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Arma 3?

Just some netlogs and RPT files. No mdmp files unfortunately.

@razazel
Do you need anything else?

@SkillerPenguin Nothing at the moment, I will let you know when there's something new or should something else pop up that would require your assistance.

Okay, this is ridiculous. This is still a daily issue for myself and some of my friends and even many others in this feedback tracker. I can't play the game more than an hour (sometimes 2 if I'm lucky) before it crashes with these symptoms every time.

Why does it seem like nothing is being done about this?!? This issue was reported several months ago by several different people and it seems that this hasn't even been looked into!

I'm a patient person, but there are limits! Can you please help us?!?

Hello,

thank you for the patience and sorry for the late reply.

I get it that none of the updates that were released since the date of the report and various profiling branch updates did not help.

There were some improvements made to the allocators in past updates, I see that you are using the default one so you might want to try to use JEMalloc_bi or system allocator to see whether the situation improves.

Also, a 64bit version of the game is available on the Dev branch. While this version is not really ideal for playing in multiplayer server that are mainly using stable branch, you might still want to try it as it could let you play for a longer period of time in SP and MP as well. 64bit version is available currently only in Dev branch as it is still a work in progress that needs a bit of work till it makes its way to stable branch.
