Loss of texture LOD and FPS Drop
Reviewed, NormalPublic

Description

I have experienced this error multiple times and can not fine the root of the problem. Have been able to duplicate problem on vanilla and modded Arma 3. Occurs occasionally and after long periods of gameplay. They're no signs of the error prior to it's occurrence and it persists until the game is restarted. The LOD of the textures will suddenly drop along with an fps drop to 3-5 FPS. Have checked thermal readings on CPU at the time of event, no temperatures exceed 40 C which is well within safe for my CPU

Hello,

thank you for the feedback.

To deal with this issue we need more info. For starters, please upload you Arma 3 Troubleshooting Report file here.

Next we mind need some specific info that you need to gather by following these few steps:

  • Switch to latest Arma 3 "profiling branch" - Steam Branches
  • Go into "Arma 3" directory in Steam and rename "arma3profiling.exe" to "arma3.exe" (Launcher and BattlEye are expecting that one).
  • Launch game and start playing.
  • Press together {L SHIFT} + {NUM -} (NUM Minus) and release them - Help
  • Then just type "frame" (as with any other cheat mentioned in the Help)
  • Should a dialogue stating it was successful appear, select "COPY ALL" (third button at the bottom row).
  • Data should be copied to clip board so paste them (CTRL+V) anywhere you want (e.g. create a new txt file on desktop and paste the info there)

Once you have those files, please upload them here (or, if you encounter any trouble with that, to some free file sharing service and post the link here).

Thank you very much :)

Including 2 .rpt files both relative to time of most recent incident. Using mods at the time.

One of those seems to be a crash report that generated also mdmp file, would you mind sending rest of the files.

And also, please try to perform the steps I mentioned earlier.

I attempted to take the steps that you provided. When I press Shift + Num - and enter "frame" nothing appears to happen. I have attempted to take the steps in multiplayer, singleplayer and editor. In the meantime here are the remaining rpt files and the mdmp file you requested.

mdmp file:

Hello,

did you switch to the profiling branch before trying the "frame"? Without the switch to profiling branch (and renaming the arma3profiling.exe to arma3.exe) that "cheat" won't have any effect.

Apologies for the lack of response, I was out of town. I have followed the steps again and I believe I was able to retrieve the info you asked for.

Hello,

thank you for the file, unfortunately due to incomplete info I had by the time I was sending the tutorial it is still not what we were looking for exactly. While you did perform the steps correctly, they need to be performed when the game is lagging or has low FPS (3-5 as you have mentioned).

So sorry about that, if possible could you please perform that again while the game is lagging?

That's no problem at all, naturally I will have to wait till the error occurs again. Is it safe to run Arma in profiling branch for an extended period of time with mods on? I play Arma almost daily in a community and if I could run it in profiling I will just enter frame when the error occurs again. If this is possible it may take me a couple of days to get back to you as the error occurs only occasionally.

No problem at all, whatever suits you best :)

Hello again :)

As progress in this case is moving forward, we are trying to pinpoint the cause, which unfortunately means yet another intel gathering.

A new profiling was published, rev. 137737, that will help us get more precise info about the issue.

Almost all of the performed steps are still the same, almost every of them only two things change:

  • needs to be the latest profiling branch rev. 137737
  • this time include also the rpt file from the session

Once you have those, ZIP them and attach them here again. One frame will do, more of them are very welcome (please make sure to have corresponding rpt as well).

Thank you

The issue persists and every time I attempt to gather the info you need the game crashes before I can retrieve it.

Are MDMP files also present? If so, please try to upload them here (if you aren't able to do so please upload them to dropbox and send a link here).

Here is a dropbox folder with three recent incidents including all the files left behind. All I am getting is a .rpt file and a bidmp. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/y608x6p8ia0njm8/AAAAvgEHouWG9wh1xxFAMMEPa?dl=0

Thanks for the info.

An RC branch was released few days back. I would recommend switching to that branch to see whether things are better there (it will eventually become Stable/Main branch update).

Again, how to switch branches

I switched branches and tested the game on multiple single player missions with no mods, the game was stable. However single player is not where I am experiencing problems, so I have switched back to the current version so I can continue to play multiplayer on servers that don't have 1.64 . While searching through my local appdata I found a multitude of crash dump files from Arma 3. These are incidents where a crash occurs while attempting to add mods to the launcher from my local files, I am unsure if these incidents are related to the bigger issue but just in case here are the files.

BIS, When you make work on this problem?
https://feedback.bistudio.com/T118335
Solve a problem, emergence of similar tickets will be reduced.

Update: Still unable to consistently play Arma 3 on my computer. Is there any other support you may provide, or is this just not a problem you can fix at this time. I have tried everything from different memory allocators to different ingame settings nothing appears to make a difference.

@icmcatee This issue is still in progress. With some fixes applied to the game in the latest update, there still seem to be issue that were not handled by that and require further investigation and fixes, unfortunately I am not sure if there anything that I can recommend at the moment.
