Mods aren't working if the game is launched from external launcher. (Play With Six / Six Launcher)
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Hello,
I wanted to report a bug that me and my friends noticed since the new update when using an external mod launcher like "Play With Six".

Before the 1.60 update, all mods were working fine. I'm using Play With Six (PWS) for years now, on Arma 2 and Arma 3, and never got any problem with it.
Since the update, when i launch the game from PWS, the game still detect the mods in the menu and extensions menu but all icons are a puzzle icon. Before the update the icons were image/pictures that were the ones that represent the mod.
So then, when launching a mission, no mods are working, not any of them.

So after testing for hours, i tried to use the A3 launcher and lauched the game with a few mods. They were working and icons in the menu were mods icons.
The thing i found is that when you launch Arma 3 on steam, it directly opens the new A3 Launcher instead of launching the game, and when i start the game using PWS, it doesn't open the A3 Launcher. So i believe the conflict is with the new A3 Launcher as it is used to launch mods too.

I want to keep PWS to launch my mods, as a lot of other people i believe, but even if the A3 Launcher is nice, it doesn't have all the features PWS give to us.

Thank you in advance for your answers/support.

Junkozane.

Edit: i'm doing some other tests right now with non workshop and workshop mods.

Edit2: problem found:
Ok so i definitely found the problem, but yep it is since the update, with Play With Six, my "mods" folder was on a different hard drive disk and were working fine, i tried to move the folder on the same HDD than Arma 3 it was the same, and now i tried with a few mods by creating a "mods" folder inside Arma 3 folder and they are all working fine.

The problem is that i was using a folder on a different HDD to save some space on the one that has Arma 3, as i have plenty of mods that are over the size of Arma 3 itself. So now mods are only detected and read if they are placed in Arma 3 main folder with a folder called "mods".

How can i continue to play with mods being outside of the Arma 3 Folder?

Hello,
most likely your issue is not related to Launcher. There's another issue with loading files that have some characters (mostly diacritics) in the path. If I'm not mistaken, the PlayWith Six launcher stores settings in a file in a user application data directory, and the path to the file contains a user name which may contain characters with diacritical mark.

After testing all of the day, effectively it seems to not be the launcher but i don't know why, every workshop mod works fine by the A3 Launcher, but if i use any mod that isn't from workshop, even with the A3 Launcher, they don't work anymore. I'm still trying to find the issue but i still haven't manage to find it.

Edit: I may have found the issue, actually testing to move the "mods" folder to different locations and with different names.

Hello,
could you please send me a few paths of mods that doesn't work. The only issue we're aware of is the one I've described in the first post (that is when there are some characters with diacritic marks).

Effectively, tried to copy/paste a few mods outside my main folder that have "é" and it worked.

So here it's not working: "K:\Téléchargement MSI\Jeux\Arma 3\mods\Six Play"
and here it is: "K:\mods"

This might be unrelated but it might not be...

I too had trouble with no mods loading on a server after 1.60 update. But I use a .cmd file to do it rather than PwS.

I eventually found that a change of the mods bit of the startup line worked:
This was the original (cut for brevity)

-mod="@CBA_A3;@ace;@acre2;@Advanced Sling Loading;@HMDs MOD (Metric);@MCC Sandbox 4 - Mission Making The Easy Way;"

But this works:

"-mod=@CBA_A3;@ace;@acre2;@Advanced Sling Loading;@HMDs MOD (Metric);@MCC Sandbox 4 - Mission Making The Easy Way"

Not sure if it's down to moving the quotes to encompass '-mod=' or ditching the final semi-colon, but it seems ArmA's command line parameter parser got a bit fussier than advertised about syntax in 1.60. Especially with regards to spaces and trailing semi-colons.

Hello -dead-
I'm having trouble reproducing your issue: I've tried all combinations and I did not encounter the issue yet. Would it be possible for you to send me two game RPTs with the different mod lines, please?

Hi BIS Wizard ---

Apologies I was wrong about what killed it — I did further testing last night (I'd ditched the original reports as it was fixed) and it was spaces between mods that blew the thing up:

-mod="@CBA_A3; @ace; @Advanced Sling Loading; @HMDs MOD (Metric); @MCC Sandbox 4 - Mission Making The Easy Way;"

Sorry for the misinformation — I was trying pretty much everything to get it to run for a game, and so I got a bit sloppy — "try three things at once, rinse & repeat".

@Astaroth, this is not a bug, but user's fault and thus not valid, since no problem in the game.
