Server you joined was not whitelisted or configured properly, resulting in a deleted character. Known issue.
Search for the server IP on here to make sure a bug report hasn't already been submitted for that server. If one doesn't exist, create a new report including the server IP for not being whitelisted or configured properly, and hopefully someone will take care of it.
They're working on patching this for the end of the month. They've acknowledged the issue, and there is no need to respond to this report for the time being.

"What is quite annoying for us, is trying to figure out if there is a legitimate issue (architecture bug) with the "loss" of characters or if it is simply the basis of servers not getting a response from the central server so going into failsafe (timing out).
I'm going to be changing the system a bit so that sessions are given numbers, so that overwriting won't occur if you start playing when another session exists. It will also inform the user they are playing on failsafe.
Will take a little while to do but hope to have something for end of the month."

"Agreed. The current situation is temporary. We went with a very simple solution to ensure the central server didn't fall over. We're now working on the more complex version."
That sucks. I would recommend sorting the server list by 0 players and keep joining them until you find one that isn't configured properly, so that it deletes your character and you start over fresh. Or drink disinfectant and eat damaged pills.
The map wont show your location without a GPS. You can look at the map and try to figure out where you went off http://dayzdb.com/map/chernarusplus#2.055.077
If you're on a daylight server the sun is hopefully in the SW direction. If you're too far west, the sun should be behind your right shoulder (possibly spawned in Kamenka before the patch). If you went too far north, try keeping the sun on the right half of your screen (possibly spawned at Dubrovka or the factory north of Solnichniy and ran north).

Game is in ALPHA. Not a bug, content is coming!
