Ocean duplication that can crash servers
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Copy of my Email:

Hello,

I have a video of an acquaintance who explained to me how he performs a duplication exploit in the ocean which may or may not be known to the developers of DayZ Standalone. I have also discovered that this exploit crashes the entire server on its execution in some cases (during what he calls an "extreme dupe"). In the case of this video, apparently the duplication of items was so large that the entire server froze upon execution.

I do not wish to post this video, or have it posted, to YouTube as it will implicate myself and others in this video. I would like a developer, or someone higher in the ranks, to contact me and provide me a way to upload my video to some sort of non-public server so that this issue can be resolved or addressed in a future release.

I have a ZERO tolerance for cheaters and people who take advantage of exploits to gain advantage over other players in the game. It was disheartening to find some of my own friends on my steam list taking part in ruining the integrity of this project which has the potential of becoming a great product upon its final release.

The video that I have was taken a few hours ago on the current Alfa build and is approximately 194mb.

Additional Information

I did upload the video to YouTube unlisted as requested; however, please keep this link in house as I do not want to promote exploits/cheating.
During the first part of the video you will see yellow boxes on the ground from a successful ocean dupe which was executed 5 minutes before I had arrived which did not crash the server; however, the dupe that I did film crashed the entire server. Unfortunately I do not have the server information.

Please keep me informed, as I will delete this video after it has been properly reviewed.

Hey Spydr,

thanks a lot for this report. We have been working on fixing a related problem recently, but your report is very nice and will definitely help us out. We'll look into it asap.

One thing I'd like to ask you is whether or not you still have the backpack (with all its contents) that is seen in the video you linked. In case you do (or are able to get it again), please send me a link to your Steam profile. You can get it by going to your profile page in the Steam client, rightlicking an empty space, selecting "Copy page URL" and then pasting it in here.

It should look something like this:

Don't worry about anyone else seeing this. Private issues are only visible to people on the development team (not even moderators can see it) and we will definitely not share it with anyone.

Once again, thank you for your effort.

Accolyte,

Unfortunately I did not obtain this particular backpack as the server did crash. At forty something years of age, playing PC games throughout the years, I have developed a set of morals to not promote exploits or cheating. Therefor, items that "I do know are duped", I won't take and I'm hoping that Battle Eye will catch people who do the dupe in the first place, eventually.

Given my maturity and gaming experience, I do have some influence over "some" of the younger generation in my possy who are quite aware of how to perform these duplications. I would be more than happy to attempt to convince 1 or 2 of my possy members to help reproduce this issue along with a developer in a Teamspeak or Skype session, if possible. I'm sure they would be thrilled to help in the actual development process of such an addicting game.

This issue is essentially two different bugs. One is the fact that you can duplicate items in the ocean and the other is that you are able to crash servers if a backpack contains certain amount of loot.

We will look into the duplication part of the issue, but we would like to get to the bottom of the server crashing part. You can help us by getting a similar backpack again and sending me the link to your profile after you successfully crash a server.

We have actually been able to reproduce the crash as well on our internal build. It is not necessary for you do anything else, we have everything we need at the moment.

If anything changes, I will let you know!

OK great news! The person who showed this to me did make a comment that some file manipulation had to be performed on their own rented server to get it working right again sometimes. I cannot get anymore information than that as I no longer have affiliations with this clan. I figured it was just a massive conflict in data between the server itself and the central database hive?

It would be cool if you could let me know what it was (inquiring mind)....
I would also like to take that video down if you guys are finished reviewing it.

thank you

Hi,

I seriously doubt that any other action than a server restart was necessary after the server crash (it wasn't for us). This crash doesn't affect the server's files in any way.

The fact that you have too many instances of loot stacked in themselves and in the same inventory slot (protector case containing other containers which contained other containers which contained...) is the cause of the issue. The server is basically unable to load up all of the items from the database due to the large amount of data and its memory will overload resulting in a crash. That's a simplified explanation.

Please keep the video up for the time being. Other team members might want to have a look at it.

Thank you!

Hi,

I would like to inform you that the server crash has been fixed on our internal build. It will be patched in the next game update.

The item duplication still remains to be fixed, but that will take some time to do. At least no servers will be breaking down now :)

Have a great day!
