I've found that emptying amok from the box is useful when you have an ammo box for storage, but it disappears if you empty the box (another issue). So I've started emptying the box in my backpack.
When you empty the box in yr backpack, the bullets appear. But, if you had some loose bullets of the same type in the backpack, their count is reduced to zero.
Pick up wrapped box of ammo
Place in backpack
Have loose rounds of the same caliber/type already in backpack
Empty the box of ammo
Other ammo count changes to zero
