Found this out with 5.56 STANAGs, but looks like it works with every kind of ammo too, since yesterday I noticed that after opening two boxes of SKS ammo and having 12 rounds in my inventory, I got less than 52 rounds.

Steps To Reproduce
- Have not full stack of ammo, i.e. 20/30 5.56
- Get box/magazine with ammo of this type, i.e. STANAG with 30/30
- "Empty" it: will get 10/30 in your first stack of 5.56, and new 20/30 stack.
Apparently, there's "-" instead of "+" somewhere in the code of auto-combining items.
