you should be able to pick food of trees as most of the towns have no food in them when you're playing also should be a lot easier to meet up with your friends a way point would be good also its a bit harsh starting the game needing water

i know it sounds silly but me and my mates seem to die mostly because of lack of food

Learn to play? No food and drinks in towns? Maybe get away of Balota, cherno and elektro. I thought it is impossible to die of starvation or dehydration since ther more food and drinks then ever. But then there are reports like that.

The games food and drink is fine at the moment. You were looting towns that had probably been looted dry.

Also you CAN get food from trees (apples) and bushes (berries) and you CAN get water from any pond (not wells at moment)
