Arma 3 crashes at start menu - pretty sure nothing is wrong with the hardware
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

I have been playing Arma 3 pretty much non-stop since the beta with over 500 hours logged, mostly playing Wasteland. This past week my game started to crash at the menu screen and it does a hard lock and sometimes a restart of my computer. I have tried pretty much everything I could find online to fix the crashing from reinstalling to trying all the different launch options. I am pretty sure there is nothing wrong with my hardware because I can play all my other games for hours without a problem and I have thrown all kinds of benchmarks and stress tests against the computer and I cannot crash it or have it show any signs of problems. I even tested the HDD and moved the Steam directory to a different HDD and still no luck.

Today I realized that there are sometimes minidump files generated when the crash happens and the screenshot below shows the result. This only happens sometimes. This indicates a problem with the video card, but still this problem only happens with Arma 3. I reinstalled the video drivers and did the driver sweeper to make sure and still no luck.

I have also tried several different video drivers, reinstalled Arma 3 several times and tried the dev branch.

Any ideas?

Also, if you think this is a problem with the hardware then please tell me what I could do to reproduce it. All of my other games, benchmarks, and stress tests I throw at my computer do not crash it or show any signs of problems.

Hello,
Thank you for reporting the issue.
We need crash dump files from this folder for solve your problem.
C:\Users\<Name>\AppData\Local\Arma 3\
Can you upload somewhere in winrar package please?
When package will be smaller than 5000k, you can attach it here. When package is bigger, please use some free sharing service and post link here.

How to find correct crashdump file:
Try to make the crash happen
Look into crashdump folder
Upload crashdump with latest date in name (crashdump is rpt + bidmp + mdmp file with same name). Please try to provide as many crashdumps as possible, it helps us investigating the problem in a big way.

Thank you.

Iceman,

Thanks for looking into this. It looks like 99% of the time there are no dump files generated when this happens and I only have the rpt files. Luckily, a few days ago it looks like there was a bidmp file saved with the rpt. So hopefully that will tell you something. I attached the files to this above.

Also, you should know that I had first posted about this problem on the main Arma 3 forums and somebody reported the exact same issue as me.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks.

Bump

This needs to be fixed.

Hello,
we sent your files to analysis, would it be possible to create another (as many as you can)?

Iceman,

98% of the time I only get the rpt files and no other dump files. Yesterday when I was trying some fixes I got a bidmp file but there was no text in it. I will try to generate another one. The bidmp file I uploaded was from 1/15 crashes I had.

Another person has reported this issue.

Iceman,

I discovered today that if I launch the game in windowed mode it will not do a hard crash and reset of the computer and displays the "DX11 DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED" error message. Doing this will also generate the error logs. I attached more error logs and a screenshot of what the error message looks like.

Thanks,

Hello,

thank you for your report and files. It seems that your problem is that DirectX crashes. This may be from various reasons, such as outdated DirectX, outdated drivers, overclocked CPU or GPU [by manufacturer or user] and many more.

Sadly, there is nothing that can be done from our site. I linked this problem to bug number #0000579, where you can read useful tips in comments.

Sorry for the inconvenience, have a nice day.
