Survive campaign progress impossible due to crash
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Game crashes hard in SP after loading first autosave of Wet Work campaign mission, and at beginning of freshly started Scuba Showcase. I am using current stable build, 1.04.111745. I had been playing the campaign with no problems. Now the crash occurs every time I load Wet Work autosave, and I cannot proceed in campaign, even if I revert to start of mission. When I restart mission, two times in a row the computer crashed after we exit from water, kill AAF on beach, and radio comms are occurring. Loading other showcases and custom missions does not cause the crash. Arma 2 and other games run fine.

The dump files provided here were generated when running A3 with only one GPU, but crashes also occur with both GPUs in SLI. The rpt files show a different set of errors than in #0000579.

Nothing helpful in crashdump.
Do you have hw overclock?
Did you try on lower graphic settings?

No overclock on GPU or CPU. Already tried lowering settings to 88% rendering, made no difference. It is very odd that crash occurs at same point in Wet Work every time. I will change settings more and test. :(

I uploaded two other dump sets to http://feedback.arma3.com/view.php?id=579. Do they show any helpful info?

Edit: I uploaded another dump here. Crash occurred at start of Scuba Showcase. Crash occurred within 10 sec of start, and I never touched the mouse. 1680x1050 resolution, SMAA high, all other settings as in my specs web site listed above. This dump does include the "buffer Map failed" DX11 error of http://feedback.arma3.com/view.php?id=579.

Yet another rpt+bidmp from crash at start of Scuba showcase uploaded. This looks suspicious: "c:\w\c_branch\poseidon\futura_stable\lib\ui\uimap.cpp DisplayGetReady::Destroy:NOT IMPLEMENTED - briefing!"

Suspicious is "buffer Map failed" DX11, this means some hw or driver issue. Did you try other DX11 games or some DX11 benchmark?

As my system specs show, my GTX 295 is DX10 only, but that hasn't been a problem so far and is within minimum system requirements. I have not run a DX11 benchmark. I just re-installed 331.65 drivers, and still get the crash.

The fact that the game and computer will crash only at start of Scuba Showcase and at nearly same point in Wet Work mission points to an A3 problem, not a hardware/driver problem. I started Tank Showcase just now and it played with no problem. Quit and started Scuba -> CRASH. What, if anything, is different with Scuba and Wet Work missions?

Are all the people having http://feedback.arma3.com/view.php?id=579 problem also having only hw/driver problems?

Please let me know of any further way to diagnose what is going on, as I am at a loss. Max Payne 3 supports DX11 (and 10, 10.1, and 9c) and it runs fine. dxdiag reports no video device errors.

Could you try add diver in editor somewhere near shore and then try dive?

I know about few solutions of 3D device removed issue and solution always was change graphic card or some update of drivers. One guy had this issue, he updated bios and issue was gone. I had same issue at home PC and it was bad overclock from manufacturer, I changed gprahic card and I never had this issue again.

Thank you for the suggestions. I already tried to place diver near water in editor and dive off Stratis, and that did NOT lead to a crash. I just did a video settings autodetect and started Scuba showcase again -> crash. Dumps will be uploaded. Note that I played through the Scuba showcase several times during Alpha and Beta with no problems.

It may be time to retire my 4-year old GTX 295.... :-(

Tried placing diver again and dove in editor -> no crash, excellent performance. Quit and started Scuba Showcase -> instacrash.

I have a GTX 680 in another machine that I can swap into my gaming box, but I am hesitant to do so as there appears to be quite a few people with 500-700 series DX11 cards that are also getting the "DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED" and related errors....

I replaced my GTX 295 with a GTX 680, and the crashing issue is gone using current stable build.

Mass closing ancient tickets with no activity this year; assume fixed or too trivial etc.

If this issue is still relevant in current dev build, please create a new ticket referencing this one and request for it to be re-opened.
