AI pilots are too good at shooting flares
Reviewed, WishlistPublic

Description

The instant I'm launching a missile, the AI pilot deploys flares. This makes it's all but impossible to engage i.e. an enemy Kajman using ASRAAM missiles.
Also, the enemy seem to spot the launch even in "dead view" hemisphere - from backwards/below.

Steps To Reproduce

My tests were done at "veteran" difficulty
1.Place an AH-99 Blackfoot, player as pilot, flying
2.Place an enemy Mi-48 Kajman, flying, at 1-2 km distance from player, facing away from the player
3.Set the behaviour to "COMBAT" for the enemy helicopter (by script or by waypoint)
3.Switch to manual fire, try to engage the chopper

Observed: enemy successfully decoys the missiles every time
Expected: when shot at 1-1.5km (basically, point blank) it should be impossible to react.

I agree with your assessment that they're too good at firing flares, OTOH in my tests every second missile did hit the target regardless of the pilot flaring. Maybe I was just lucky, though.

Flares should be fully automatic anyway. Modern aircraft have sensors that automatically launch flares when they pick up something that could be taken as a missile launch signature and notify the pilot to execute evasive maneuvers.

But this goes into defensive systems in general, which are not implemented. At the start they wanted to do tank defense systems (ie, trophy on the slammer, for example), those aren't in either.

I don't mind the AI pilots flaring. Just make sure you got good angles.

Problem is - angles don't make a difference here. There's no "guaranteed hit" envelope, like it would be with real aircraft (read: missile launch from behind at close distance. Due to inability to spot the launch, accounted for vast majority of MANPADS-"induced" Soviet helicopter losses in Afghanistan).
I'm not against giving AI chances to stand against the player, but curretnly the engagement is all about the chances and nothing about tactics.

If there's an auto-dispensing system modelled - it should be given to the player as well, if not - well, make the AI have some delay before launching flares. Even 0.2 seconds would make a difference.

Point is heli countermeasures are ridiculously effective.
Even with a Cheetah or a Tigris, that are supposed to be the best AA platform given their dedicated role, they drop flares and missiles are evaded, even by shooting them one at a a time or all together.
In the mean time they have ATGMs that can lock from 5km away and there's really nothing you can do to evade them, making any ground AA platform worthless.

Well, tab lock is another issue... Here, I mainly talk about A2A combat.

Of course, if this gets fixed, AA would benefit too.
