Physx_86.dll CTD randomly every 20-40 minutes
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Nvidia GTX 670 FTW

My game will crash to desktop every 20-40 minutes when playing Wasteland by Sa-Matra. The game has crashed like this before during single-player, but I cannot confirm that the crashes were PhysX_86.dll related.

The crash happens like this:
Game freezes
Sound cuts out 1-2 second(s) later
I'm forced to ctrl+alt+delete to open up the task manager to kill the process
An error report is up when I open the task manager.

I have tried to:
a) Delete physx_86 related files and reinstall through Steam 'validate assets' process.
b) Reinstall the game entirely.
c) Run the dxsetup.exe through the arma3 directory.
d) Roll back GPU drivers (I had most up to date previously)
e) added the following launch options: -cpuCount=8 -noPause -noSplash -world=empty
f) Set CUDA in Nvidia control panel to CPU
g) disabling ALL background windows/processes and NOT alt+tabbing
h) disabling various graphic settings.

I'm seeing many people with this same issue. Hopefully it's a priority for the next update(s). Figured I'd log my own instance here. Please let me know if I can supply any other information.

I am not sure if this is related ... but I have a similar issue, for which I have found a work-around.

The game does not totally freeze on me, instead the screen just goes black, and it does not take any keyboard, or mouse input.

The work-around I do is:

  1. Press Alt-Tab, but don't release the Alt key
  2. Keep holding Alt so that the Window switching screen does not disappear
  3. At this point, you have the Window switching screen overlayed on top of the game's black-screen
  4. After about 1 or 2 seconds, the game's back-screen disappears, and goes back to normal.
  5. While still holding the Alt key down, press Esc, to cancel the Window switching screen.
  6. You are now back in the game, without black-screen.

We need dxdiag and files from this folder for solve your problem. C:\Users\<Name>\AppData\Local\Arma 3\

Upload complete. DxDiag was already attached. Let me know if you need anything else.

FYI - The above fixes have seemed to lessen the intensity of the crashes. Not sure if I'm just getting lucky, but I notice I can play longer. Over an hour at times.
